Communication lost device control panel turn off then on ошибка принтера

Hello,

After completing the most recent firmware update (20140529) one of my 525s is displaying an error message:

«Lost Communication (device (-) Control panel) Turn off then on…»

This error message is only displayed on the control panel for the users in that area but cannot be seen from the Embedded Web Server (hence no screenshots).

Some steps I have tried to resolve the problem:

— Update the firmware

— Reboot

— Reboot unplugged from the network

— Reboot connected to a different network port

— Confirm SNMPv3 is configured correctly

I have also noticed that when this problem happens a 2nd issue occurs where the printer gets stuck on the boot sequence right at 2/8.  Previous firmware notes indicated that this was an issue with the Sleep Timer Setting.  Apparently if this setting is misconfigured it will not wake up on a Network Port Event while in sleep mode as it should.  This sounded like it was related but, alas, the firmware update did not stop it from happening for me.

Observations I have made:

— When the problem occurs the printer fails to properly boot itself.  It stops the boot sequence early to flash the Communication Error message.

— Once a full reboot is completed the problem will go away for a while

— It often requires multiple reboots for the printer to «wake up» and start talking to the network again.  Eventually you get lucky and it completes a full boot and the problem goes away.

— Event logs show Corrupt data in configuration volume and corrupted info log file

— Event logs show multiple General Address Book services errors

Anyone else having this problem or have any suggestions for resolving the initial root problem of the «Communication Error» message?

HP CM4540 MFP Communication Lost (device <-> control panel error)

    Hello everyone!

I am new to the forum, but looking forward to interacting with such a talented group of people.

I was wondering if anyone has seen this error message on an HP CM4540 MFP. When I power it up it displays this error message on the Control Panel LCD display, «Communication Lost (device <-> control panel error)». I have the service manual on this unit, but it sheds very little light on what may causing this issue. I cannot tell if this is a bad Formatter board, or a bad DC Controller board. The machine will not print an Engine Test page. I have tried to print an Engine Test page with both the Formatter board installed, and again with it removed. No luck. I noticed that when the machine is powered up, the Formatter board heartbeat LED remains a solid green and does not flash/pulsate. I assume this is because the printer never completes initialization process. I have no spare parts to swap out in order to determine if it is a DC Controller board, or the Formatter board. Also, I have checked all the voltages on the LVPS and they are all present and correct. Any ideas on where to go from here would be great.

    Thank you to all!

It sounds like DC controller to me just for the fact that it won’t do an engine test correctly… the DC controller also communicates with both the formatter and op panel. That would be my best guess.

Hey thanks for the reply uciin. Interestingly, yesterday I had an HP tech. on the phone about this. He was adamant that it was a bad Formatter. I surmised the same thing as you, a DC Controller problem since it would not perform an Engine test, but the HP guy was «certain» it was the formatter . I don’t know if you have seen the service manuals on the HP «CM» series of MFP’s, but they are not very good. Anyway, I informed my customer that it could be either board causing the problem and there was no way to tell which, unless one or the other was replaced. The boards are expensive, so needless to say he was not very happy about it. I have yet to hear back on what my customer wants to do, but based on the HP tech. input I suggested replacing the Formatter board first. I will post the results, if any, in this thread in case it might help someone else with this issue.

Yes, the manuals for these HP’s are not very helpful. That would be great to know which it was, my bet is still on the controller though.

I don’t remember for that machine, but the service manual should say whether or not the formatter still being in the printer can affect the engine test results. Some machines you have to remove the formatter and then do the engine test. Of course, that means the display will be black, but it will either pass (print the pages with lines) or fail (not print anything).

The service manual does state that the formatter can affect the engine test results. Which is why I removed the formatter and tried the engine test again. The control panel does go dark, but if I understood the test procedures correctly, it should still be able to perform an engine test. In my case it does not. Interestingly, I also have an HP CM3530 in my shop with very similar problems. Same type of scenario. It comes down to either DC Controller or the formatter board. This one will not perform an engine test either, regardless of whether or not the formatter is installed or not.

I will post what the end results are when this is resolved. It may serve to help someone else with similar problems. Rather a perplexing problem. If I had an o-scope and a better circuit diagram maybe I could devise a way to determine a test that would define how to determine which board cause these issues. Sadly, I have neither and the service manual is severely lacking, at least on this type of problem.

Thanks to all who have making comments and suggestions. I really appreciate it.

Re: HP CM4540 MFP Communication Lost (device <-> control panel error)

Hello All, I’ve had two CM4540’s with this error and replacing the formatter and disk drive cured this problem. I did try the engine test with the formatter installed and uninstalled and the engine test would not print. I installed formatter first with old hard drive (after disk clean and reload firmware) and had the same error. Installed new hard drive on old formatter same problem, installed both the new formatter and hard drive and machines rebooted to ready.

Re: HP CM4540 MFP Communication Lost (device <-> control panel error)

Thanks Sheppard. Really, this error can be caused by either one as it is a failure in communication between the 2.

If a hard drive is installed (or other EIO optional device), I would remove it and see if the problem goes away. If it does, try reinitializing the hard drive. If that doesn’t work, replace the hard drive.

If it does not have a hard drive, replace the formatter. Reason: 1) newer HP machines seem to have formatter weaknesses and 2) HP tech recommended it first (if you have a case number and the formatter doesn’t fix it, you can return the formatter and get a credit.

If the formatter doesn’t work, replace the DC controller.

Re: HP CM4540 MFP Communication Lost (device <-> control panel error)

Firmware is installed on the hard drive so unit cannot be booted without. I did a clean drive on both units and reinstalled the firmware before ordering the parts (no eio options or fax card installed) . I’m going out now to work on my 7th Cm4540 today in 8 days. Most of the time a partial clean or a clean disk and reload firmware will fix most of the problems. Don’t believe eveything you hear from support.

Update: The fix for the HP CM4540 turned out to be a faulty Formatter PCB. I had ruled out the hard drive by removing it, attaching it to a PC and running hard drive diagnostics on it, to check that the drive controller and platters were not damaged. The drive passed diagnostics. I spoke with my customer (who had both an HP CM4540 MFP and a CM3530 MFP) in my shop with these same types of issues. Based on feedback from the professionals that replied to this tread offering support, and what HP support was saying, I advised my customer to purchase a replacement Formatter PCB for the CM4540, and a replacement DC Controller PCB for the CM3530. It was the correct diagnosis for both machines. A replacement Formatter for the CM4540 solved the problem, and the replacement DC Controller for the CM3530 solved its problem.

It is unfortunate that the HP service manuals do not do a better job of providing detailed repair information for repair technicians where the formatter and DC Controller . Very sad indeed.

I would like thank all who took an interest in this issue. Your input proved to be invaluable and I wanted to say thank you very much!

Hat Tip to: ucinn, prntrfxr, and Sheppard for all your input. Very much appreciated. It was a terrific help to me on this. Thank you!

    Very sincerely,

    Lane

I was able to fix my issue by following the following process:

1. In between the printer boots, I quickly enabled (you may have to try couple of times as your printer may display error message before you can make this change) «Allow Downgrade» from the printer display,  Setup ==> Service ==> LaserJet Update ==> Manage Updates  ==> Allow Downgrade (Selected Yes)

2. Connected my printer to my Windows laptop with USB Cable. Make sure printer is configured on this computer,

3. Downloaded firmware 20200612 executable from the following link. Note: it is not available on HP site.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1urL5kVlQYBZEFrVi2PO9Npf6Nla0PJLQ/view?usp=sharing

4. Ran (Double click) the firmware executable file  HP_LaserJet_Pro_M280_M281_Printer_series_20200612.exe and sent to the printer in question. Note:  it might take few iterations to send the firmware to the printer.  Each time printer boots up, try to access the menu items to delay the reboot,  which allows the update to go throw. Eventually firmware will get downloaded to the printer.

5. Once the firmware is updated,  in the subsequent reboot, I saw  «Programming…» on the display and it took few minutes to boot up. It has booted up couple of times with the same message.

6. Once the printer booted up, disabled «Allow Update»  Setup ==> Service ==> LaserJet Update ==> Manage Updates  ==> Allow Update (Selected No)

7. This fixed my problem.

Here is a reference note that I used to fix my problem.

https://markohoven.com/2020/11/10/hp-laserjet-pro-m280-m281-printer-series-20200612-firmware-downgra…

In Windows 11, Microsoft has introduced completely new settings for Printers & Scanners. But, after updating to Windows 11, many users are facing trouble while printing. Especially, Canon Printer users are getting Communication Errors. Communication Error usually occurs in wired printers. When the printer is not turned on. Or, the USB cable isn’t properly connected. This error can also occur with Wireless Printers when the WiFi Network is malfunctioning.

However, If your printer is properly connected and turned on, and still you’re continually facing the error. Then, the problem could be with the Windows Printer Services or Settings. Here’s how to resolve a Canon printer communication Error on Windows 11 or Windows 10.

Tip: If you’re in hurry and want to print a document. Then, apply 4th solution, and the printing process will get started. But, if you want to permanently fix this, then do follow each solution mentioned in this article.

Fix Canon Printer Communication Error on Windows 11

Solution 1: Make Sure the Printer is Properly Connected.

As Mentioned Earlier, Communication Error in canon printers occurs when the printer isn’t properly connected. Even, the error window shows to check the following:

  • Is the printer turned on?
  • Is the cable properly connected?

1. First, do check the Power LED in Printer is turned on or not. It could be blue or green, as per the printer model number.

2. After that, make sure the Printer’s USB Cable is connected to the PC/Laptop or not. Sometimes, the cable gets loose from behind the printer. So, do check that as well.

3. If you have an extra cable, then, do replace the USB cable and try printing again.

4. If you’re using a relay device such as a USB hub, then do connect the cable directly to Computer.

Solution 2: Make Sure the Printer is Online.

In Windows, you can check whether the Printer is Connected Properly or Not. Windows show offline status when the Printer is not connected properly. Here’s how you can check Printer Status on Windows 11.

1. Open Settings App on Windows by pressing Windows + I Keyboard Shortcut.

2. Click on Bluetooth & devices from the left pane. And, after that, click on “Printers & scanners”.

Windows 11 Printers and Scanners Settings

3. Click on your Printer name and model number.

Select Cannon Printer

4. If your Printer now shows Offline status. Then, it means the USB cable is not properly connected. And, the issue is from the hardware side. Well, no worries, you can easily fix Printer Offline Error on Windows by reading our article on it.

Canon Printer is Offline

5. Now, do connect the Printer USB Cable Properly. There will be no “offline” status when the printer is properly connected. And, you will only see Default in Printer Status.

If you’re using an older version of Windows. Then, go to Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Devices and Printers. And, click on your Canon Printer and you can check Printer Status.

Solution 3: Set Canon Printer as your Default Printer.

If your printer is properly connected but still Windows is not able to communicate with it. Then, it could possible that the Printer configuration isn’t done right. First, you have to make sure that Canon Printer is set to default.

Steps to set Default Printer in Windows 11 22H2.

1. Press Windows + I Keyboard Shortcut to open Windows 11 Settings App.

2. Click on Bluetooth & devices from the left pane. After that, click on “Printers & scanners”.

3. Now, Click on your Canon Printer Name and Model Number.

4. You will now see the “Set as Default” option, click on it.

Set Canon as your Default Printer

Steps to set Default Printer in Windows 10 and Older.

1. Open Control Panel. (Open it from Windows Desktop or use Windows Search.)

2. Go to Hardware and Sound > Devices and Printers.

3. In the Printers section, you will find your Canon Printer listed. Do right-click on it and click on “Set as default printer”.

Set as Default Printer Control Panel

4. That’s it, you will see a Green Mark over your Canon Printer.

Note: If you don’t find your Printer listed in the settings and control panel. Then, you have to install Printer Drivers.

Solution 4: Restart Print Spooler Service.

Like Windows Programs, Printing also relies on some services. And, sometimes, these services stop working due to some third-party programs. By restarting Print Spooler Service you can fix the Communication Error of any Canon Printer instantly. And, when you will try to print the document again, no error will occur.

What is Print Spooler Service?

Install SM Bus Controller Driver on Windows 11

This service basically handles Windows interactions with your Printer. And, it is responsible for print jobs. If this service is turned off or not working properly. Then, you will not able to print any documents. Or, you might not able to see your printer in Windows Settings.

Keep the Communication Error window open and do follow the following steps:

Canon LBP2900 Printer Error

1. Press Windows + R key to open Run Window.

2. Type services.msc in the run window and press enter.

Open Windows 11 Services

3. Services window will get open, do look for the “Print Spooler” service. Do right-click on it and then click on Properties.

Open Print Spooler Properties

4. Now, in the startup type, do select the “Automatic” option. Click on Apply > Ok.

Set Print Spooler Service Startup Type to Automatic

5. After that, right-click on the Print Spooler service and then click on Restart.

Restart Print Spooler Service

6. Wait for Print Spooler Service to get restarted. And, you will notice that the Communication Error window will now be turned into the “Ready to Print” window.

Canon Printer Ready to Print

Now try to print the document again and Printing Process will get started.

Canon Printing Process Get Started

So, that’s how you can fix Canon Communication Error on Windows 11. First, make sure there isn’t an issue from the hardware side of the Printer. After that, set Canon Printer as your Default Printer. Also, make sure the Printer status is offline. If Communication Error still appears, then simply restart Print Spooler Service.

Hello,

Re: HP CM4540 MFP Communication Lost (device <-> control panel error)

    Lane

Microsoft Store Slow Download Speed

This service basically handles Windows interactions with your Printer. And, it is responsible for print jobs. If this service is turned off or not working properly. Then, you will not able to print any documents. Or, you might not able to see your printer in Windows Settings.

Keep the Communication Error window open and do follow the following steps:

So, that’s how you can fix Canon Communication Error on Windows 11. First, make sure there isn’t an issue from the hardware side of the Printer. After that, set Canon Printer as your Default Printer. Also, make sure the Printer status is offline. If Communication Error still appears, then simply restart Print Spooler Service.
