If your Discord installation has failed, we will take you through some of the best fixes for Windows 10.

Discord might stop running without apparent reasons, though usually, the problems are related to corrupted files. For example, a Windows 10 update or a new program installed on your PC can interfere with internal Discord packages.

Why does Discord keep saying installation failed?

It might be the case that a previous version of Discord was installed on your computer at some point, and that installation left behind some files that are incompatible with the newer version.

In this case, you will have to completely remove Discord and then reinstall the application.

Why can’t I install Discord on Windows 10?

This is a common issue, and the Discord installation failed error can appear on Windows 11 as well. However, in most cases, you just need to clear the application cache and try to install it again.

On the other hand, if you don’t have the necessary permissions, you might get Failed to extract the installer during Discord setup.

  • Background app – It is not uncommon for some applications running in the background to interfere with installing the Discord app.
  • Old discord installations – If you try to install Discord on a device with an old installation, it is likely that the installation will fail. Leftovers from the previous Discord design can also prevent you from having a clean installation.
  • No admin privileges – The Windows privileges that run on your operating system are also necessary. Thus, you have to ensure that you’re using the correct ones.

As you can see, there are a handful of reasons why your installation may fail. A few of the most common triggers for this problem include:

When the installation fails, you may be hit with any of the following messages:

  • Discord installation has failed to extract the installer – Other means of extracting the executable file may be required. For example, scanning your device for malware might help if you fail to extract the Discord installer.
  • The Discord won’t install on PC – You should just take a look at the fixes below, as they have proved very helpful.
  • Discord installation has failed check setup log – The setup log summarizes everything that happens during installation.
  • Discord installation has failed on Squirrel – Squirrel is a complete updater or installer. You can see it in action by looking through Discord’s starting logs.

Now that you know the most common reasons for a failed Discord installation in Windows 10, let’s see what you can do to fix it.

  • The setup log error is an installation problem you might often face while installing Discord. Regardless of the cause, you can resolve it with some simple methods in most cases. You can then install Discord on your device without any further problems.

    Are you looking for effective solutions to the Discord error setup log? Then, go through the information below to know how to deal with this error.

    The methods we have mentioned here are some of the most effective ones for fixing this issue on your PC.

    Discord Error Setup Log: What Causes it & How to Resolve it?

    Since it is an installation error, you must consider incompatibility as a possible cause. Many Windows users have also found damaged installation files as the cause of the setup log error.

    This error might also sometimes occur due to interference from a third-party app. So, you must make sure about the cause to find an appropriate solution.

    Alternatively, you can start proceeding with the following solutions right away:

    Get Rid of the Damaged Installation Files

    As mentioned earlier, damaged installation files are a possible cause of the Discord error setup log. Not only that, but it is one of the most common reasons for installation errors.

    So, you must try downloading the installation files again on your device. Ensure to delete all the previously downloaded installation files before proceeding with that.

    Go to the official Discord website once you have deleted the damaged installation file. Then, download the right installation file for your system version. Your PC should face no errors while installing Discord after that. If the error persists, the problem might not lie in the installation files.

    Stop all Discord Processes

    Did you face the Discord error setup log while installing a new app version or reinstalling the app? Then, it might indicate a process related to the older installation running on your device.

    As you might know, your device should not run such processes during Discord installation. So, you must verify whether that is causing the problem.

    Go to the Task Manager and view the background processes running on your PC. Do you find some Discord processes running there? If yes, then right-click each of them and click on ‘End task’. Proceed with the installation again once done and check whether the error persists.

    Delete all Files from the Previous Discord Installation

    The setup log error might occur because your PC still has the files from an older installation. You must delete them for a solution if that applies to your case.

    Go to the File Manager and look for the folder of the Previous Discord installation. Delete all the files you find in it, and then try the installation again.

    Does the Discord error setup log persist after you try this solution? If yes, then you must consider a damaged installation file if you have not done so already.

    Apart from that, you must also check whether your browser is causing issues.

    Change Browser Settings or Use a Different Browser

    Your device might often end up downloading malicious files and programs through web browsers. And, most of the latest browser versions feature protective measures to avoid such situations.

    You can customise their security settings to prevent them from downloading various files. But, that can sometimes cause the Discord error setup log on your PC.

    So, you must check the security settings on your browser and make the necessary changes to them. Your device should be able to download all Discord installation files without any issues after that.

    Alternatively, you can simply switch to another browser if you have one on your device. And, that can usually offer you a quicker solution after all.

    Close or Remove Third-Party Apps

    You might be using various third-party apps on your PC. And, some of them might come into conflict with each other. Like all other apps, Discord might also face issues due to certain apps on your device.

    So, this is yet another possible cause you must consider for the Discord error setup log. Especially so, if the previous steps did not work in your case.

    Did you start facing the error after getting a specific app on your device? Then, you can try deleting it for a solution. Apart from that, you must also consider removing any third-party apps you do not need.

    If that does not fix the problem, you can also start your device in Safe Mode. And, that should disable third-party apps and let you install Discord without any problems.

    Update Your Device Drivers

    The Discord error setup log might also have something to do with your device drivers. After all, outdated drivers are yet another possible cause of the installation error. And, updating the drivers can help you get an effective solution in such situations. Open the Device Manager and make sure you use the latest drivers for all devices.

    Manually updating all drivers might take a significant amount of time. You can avoid that by using driver update software for the task. Restart your PC after the updates are completed and check on the problem.

    Update Your Windows System

    Does your PC have an outdated system version? Then, getting the latest system version might help you resolve the Discord error setup log. So, you must give that a try if none of the aforementioned solutions worked. Navigate to the Update and Recovery section on your Settings page.

    Search for updates and proceed with installing the latest one available for your device. Then, try to install Discord once your PC restarts after the update. This step might be more viable than updating only the drivers.

    What if These Fixes Fail?

    Have you failed to resolve DIscord installation problems after trying out all possible solutions? Then, there might be an issue with the device you are using. So, try using a different device for using the app. You can also consider using the web version until you find a solution.

    @steveward

    Thanks for the report @mudslide89. The Discord errors are likely due to the fact that Discord also uses the Squirrel installer. These errors also seem to date back to 9/10/18 — did you just recently try to install GitHub Desktop?

    A few other questions:

    • Did you grab this log file from %LocalApData%SquirrelTemp? That’s the general log location that the Squirrel installer writes to.
    • Could you check to see if there is a SquirrelSetup.log file in
      %LocalAppData%GitHubDesktop?
    • Are any other directories or files in %LocalAppData%GitHubDesktop? That would indicate whether or not GitHub Desktop experienced a failure during the installation process.

    I use to have the Git program installed but it was Many years old I think it had the old GitHub Desktop platform. I unintalled it right before I was going to install the Gethub Desktop (The GitHub I had was pre- Discord installed)

    Did you grab this log file from %LocalApData%SquirrelTemp? That’s the general log location that the Squirrel installer writes to.
    No, When GitHub Desktop failed to install it gave me the option to see log file in wordpad
    UPDATE: I did find a SquirrelTemp Folder in my AppData but it only consists of SquirrelSetup.txt file

    Could you check to see if there is a SquirrelSetup.log file in %LocalAppData%GitHubDesktop?
    No, I search the few files it has and did not find that file

    Are any other directories or files in %LocalAppData%GitHubDesktop? That would indicate whether or not GitHub Desktop experienced a failure during the installation process.
    YES, There are some directories and files within that folder.

    @steveward

    Thanks for the update @mudslide89. Could you try deleting the %LocalAppData%GitHubDesktop directory and then try installing GitHub Desktop again? If that fails, please grab the log files from these locations and upload them so I can take a look:

    %LocalAppData%GitHubDesktopSquirrelSetup.log
    %LocalAppData%SquirrelTempSquirrelSetup.log

    Thanks for the update @mudslide89. Unfortunately that log file is still from September 10th, so it is not providing any information about why GitHub Desktop is failing to install. The main installation issue we have seen on Windows has been due to users running 32-bit version of Windows, but since you are running a 64-bit version of Windows that isn’t the case here.

    Would you mind trying to install Atom on your machine to see if that succeeds? Atom is also built on Electron and uses the same installer as GitHub Desktop, so if you are unable to install Atom it should indicate whether or not this is a broader system issue.

    September 10th? I didn’t even download/ try to install this until October 11th (The same day I made this report) And my time and date are set correctly.

    NOTE: I just noticed the date that’s odd it’s not dating the error report correctly.

    No, it didn’t install it gave me an error, Also the error log (See Below) while trying to install Atom, that just got created (10/15/2018 «Month, Day Year» at 10:26 PM) still showing that date…

    @mudslide89 can you try removing that old log file and running the installer again? That might help us get some fresh information…

    So… I deleted that file and try to reinstall and now the log for the errors come up blank (For both GithubDesktop and Atom)

    @shiftkey

    @mudslide89 I’m really puzzled about what’s happening here. I’d expect something (either good or bad) to be found at %LOCALAPPDATA%GitHubDesktopSquirrelSetup.log or %LOCALAPPDATA%atomSquirrelSetup.log (just checked both of these locations again).

    Download the setup exe and run it as administrator

    I’m not sure if you’re still doing this, but the GitHub Desktop and Atom installers do not require elevation to run (they install to %LOCALAPPDATA% for the current user). Are you able to test this out without running it as administrator?

    The squirrelSetup.log for bot are completely empty :/ and I have tried it without being run as Admin for both but running into errors

    @shiftkey

    but running into errors

    Can you share a screenshot of the error you are seeing? Let’s start from there and work our way back…

    That’s the problem, It just says there’s an error in installation but the SuirrelSetup.log is empty when you click «Open Setup Log».

    @steveward

    @mudslide89 thanks for the screenshots. Are you running any antivirus/security software on this machine that could be blocking the installation of GitHub Desktop?

    Also, I’m not sure it will show anything, but it may be worth checking Event Viewer to see if there are any errors being logged there. Here’s how to do that:

    1. From the start menu search for Event Viewer to launch it
    2. In the left sidebar, expand «Windows Logs» and select «Application»
    3. In the right sidebar, select «Filter Current Log…» and check the «Error» event level.

    Let me know if there are any errors there that look related to the installation issue you are experiencing.

    @billygriffin

    Since we haven’t heard back from @steveward’s above questions, I’m going to close this. Typically when we see issues like this they’re configuration related (like antivirus and such), but it’s difficult to say for sure. Hope you were able to resolve it!

    @steveward

    @subsoap it looks like there may be an issue with your .NET installation. What version of Windows are you currently running? Microsoft has a .NET Framework Repair Tool you can use to try and repair any issues.

    @subsoap

    Yes, there for sure was, and probably something similar happened with previous user.

    @sagarbk0

    I got the same error message, I’m using Windows 10 and when I ran it in compatibility mode for Windows 8, it installed!

    it didn’t work for me :(

    @subsoap

    Back up the data on your drive and stop using it. Get a new drive for your computer, SSD preferred. Then do clean install.

    @PeachieDude

    Im having the same error as the op, anyway to fix it?!
    //edit
    after deleting the discord and squirrel folder i was able to instal github, just had to reinstall discord back again after it.

    @lorein0688

    The most common reason for the discord installation failed is the corrupted system files. It might happen some of the system files get corrupted while installing a new program.
    So, try repairing the corrupted system files by running the SFC tool, moreover also end the Discord process running in the background and set the compatibility with the operating system.
    Hope this works for you.
