Having DX12 installed does not fix an issue caused by not having DX11.1 installed … !

However you are definitely getting «Failed Creating Render Backend» on win10? Because we’ve only seen that on Win7 so far.

I have a similar problem with windows 10. My drivers are up to date.

I can start the game and play ~20 minutes then the game «crash». The game is still running (I can still hear the sound and interact with my mouse in the game) but I can’t see anything.
So I close the game and when I want to restart it, I receive the same error message «Failed Creating Render Backend».

After the reboot of windows, I can again start the game for ~20 minutes until it crash…

EDIT:
This time, the game crash and close.

DXDIAG is a program you run from a command prompt or the Windows start menu ‘run’ dialog box (or ‘search programs’ in Windows 7 or later). After running it will open a window and start collecting info with a progress bar in the lower-left corner. When it completes click the ‘save all information’ button and save it to a file then attach that file here.

Please attach your Documents/Paradox/Imperator/pdx_settings.txt.
From your Documents/Paradox/Imperator/logs/ folder, attach system.log .

There’s something wrong with your nVidia driver installation. In Display Devices it shows:

Card name: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti
Driver Date/Size: 11-12-18 02:00:00, 957800 bytes

But in System Devices all the nVidia driver dates are 3/28/2019.

— uninstall your existing nVidia driver, and all associated apps such as Shadowplay and GeForce Experience
— reboot
— install the latest by fresh download from here:
https://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us
— reboot again

Hopefully that will do it for you!

Unfortunately no.

I did what you said and it worked since the date has changed.

Card name: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti
Driver Date/Size: 17-04-19 02:00:00, 957800 bytes

But the game still crashes.

If that can help:
Once the game has crashed, I receive the error «Failed Creating Render Backend» from Imperator Rome but I also have an error when I want to start Europa Universalis who says «Failed to create a graphics device. Existing.»

I think the game is still active somehow after the crash and prevents a new game starting from using the video card correctly. Could you check with the task manager if the game is really dead? If not, try and stop the process and then restart the game.

I think the game is still active somehow after the crash and prevents a new game starting from using the video card correctly. Could you check with the task manager if the game is really dead? If not, try and stop the process and then restart the game.

So I had this problem too with both my copies of Imperator Rome and CK3. I tried fixing it the same way I fixed my Imperator and it seemed to work.

  1. Go into the drive you saved your CK3 files in (the one you saved it in when you installed the game)

  2. Find the «SteamLibrary» folder (or bypass steps 1-4 if you did not buy it through steam)

  3. Go into «steamapps» folder

  4. Go into «common» folder

  5. Go into your «Crusader Kings III» folder

  6. Go onto the «binaries» folder

  7. Copy and paste the «d3dcompiler_47.dll» file onto your desktop

  8. Delete the «d3dcompiler_47.dll» file from the «binaries» folder

  9. Restart computer

  10. Try launching the game

The reason I say copy and paste the «d3dcompiler_47.dll» file onto your desktop is sometimes you will get the error again (or at least I did) and the way to fix it is you have to (for an unknown reason) copy and paste it back into the «binaries» folder. If you run into the error again you have to do these steps again.

Its kind of annoying, but it did work for me.

Also, with Imperator I have not yet ran into this error again since the last update, so it could be a stability thing that will eventually be fixed through updates.

The game won’t start properly on Windows 7!
You must have the d3dcompiler_47.dll issue, hence you are missing Service Pack 1 from windows update on windows 7! (На 10-ке тоже актуально)

Hi there,
I’m having some some issues with GDM/gnome-shell/Nvidia, but I can’t really figure out whats going on. After a normal reboot, my system just got stuck after opening up mu LUKS crypt without any boot messages being printed. I don’t even recall having updated before or something like that. I believe it happened spontaneously.

I vaguely recall a very similar case in recent history, which was solved by switching my proprietary nvidia driver from the rolling-release to the lts version, as my graphics card rolled out of support. So I grabbed my rescue thumb drive, chroot’ed into my system and just ran a full system upgrade. After this, at least new messages appeared during boot, but the system still gets stuck at

. I also disabled all gnome extension, but that didn’t help either. There also was a similar case with the dropbox.service going rampage with resulted in gnome-shell not starting, but I disabled it and the logs show none of that kind of problem.

Maybe a few words about my system:
I’m using a Lenovo T430, which features the Optimus Technology for hybrid graphics; so I have an internal Intel graphics chip and an external Nvidia GPU. Because I need the performance and couldn’t setup bumblebee or primus correctly a few years back, I just disabled the intel chip and am running the Nvidia card all the time ever since. lspci says the following about my graphics card:

NVIDIA Cooperation GF108M [NVS 5400M]
    Subsystem Lenovo GF108M [NVS5400M]

The following packages match pacman -Qs nvidia

libvdpau 1.1.3+3
libxnvctrl 396.51-1
nvidia-390xx 390.77-14
nvidia-390xx-utils 390.77-1
nvidia-cg-toolkit 3.1-4

I also have the lib32 versions installed.
I also have the nouveau drivers installed, but I believe I’m using nvidia. Unfortunately switching ttys with ctrl-alt-f does not work in the non-booting state and I personally can’t tell from the logs, some help to get certainty here would be well appreciated. The rescue system from the thumbdrive lists nouveau as loaded.
pacman -Qs nouveau yields

plus the lib32 version.

Seeing this I added

to my

/usr/modprobe.d/nvidia-390xx.conf

, but that didn’t change anything. Previously the file only contained  the nouveau blacklist.

I also tried reinstalling the nvidia driver—to no effect. I also tried removing the nouveau blacklist entry in the nvidia modprobe config and added some xorg configuration according to the wiki to test if the nouveau driver was working. Now the system keeps creating more c2, c2, c3, … sessions for gdm and keeps crashing.

I’m really clueless at this point. I don’t know graphics card stuff, x, gdm enough to be able to debug it or find further information. Also I can only inspect the system from the rescue thumb drive, so I’m not even entirely sure which drivers are loaded etc. All I can do is look at the logs. If you have any hints, that would be great!

Here is some excerpt from my last boot log (I can’t easily post everything, since I can only look at the logs using the cli-only rescue disk and have to manually copy everything here using my roommates computer. )

...
systemd: Started Daemon for power management.
gnome-shell: Failed to create backend: Could not find a primary drm kms device

gnome-session-binary: WARNING: App 'org.gnome.Shell.desktop' exited with code 1

...
/usr/lib/gdm-x-session: Fatal server error:
/usr/lib/gdm-x-session: (EE) no screens found(EE)
...

this repeats a couple of times with the c1 user number increasing.
I hope this helps, if you need me to copy more gdm-x-session output, or some other parts of the log, please let me know. In the meantime I’ll look into a possibility to copy the logfile to somewhere wehre I can easily paste it. Same is true for the /var/log/Xorg.0.log file, which might be useful?

Thanks so much!

Edit:
I managed to mount another thumb drive and copy the logs. Could’ve thought about that earlier.
This is journalctl -e > journal.log. For some reason -b -0 just gives me an empty less and -b -1 the second-to-last boot. So I resided to this method. Maybe be so kind and teach me how to properly use and export with journalctl.
This is /var/log/Xorg.0.log.

Launcher crashes with error message «Failed creating render backend.» I could use some help.

Hey everyone, I just got the game last night and so far am loving it. However, since around 11 am today, every time I try to launch the game, I get an error message that says «Failed creating render backend.» After that error, the launcher crashes.

Do you guys know what that means/how to fix it? If you google the problem, all that comes up is fixes for Imperator Rome, not CK3.

Crusader Kings 3 crash on launch fix – Players are constantly facing crashes on launch in Crusader Kings 3. Is there a way to fix this issue? Lets find out.

Performance issues are very common in AAA games these days. Especially the big AAA titles. I don’t think I have seen a big title so far that got released without any bugs or performance related problems this year.

Some players are reporting that they are experiencing crashes with an error message that says “Failed to create render backend” whenever they are trying to launch Crusader Kings 3, on the forums. While for some the game won’t even start. While we wait for the developers to release a patch there are few steps that you can try to fix the issues.

The developers are already aware about this issue and they themselves have recommended few fixes. Here they are.

How to fix the crash on launch issue

The fixes and pretty straight forward and wouldn’t require you to do anything complex.

An user called Rivve posted about this issue on the forums. This is what one of the developers had to say regarding this.

Hello Rivve,

Thanks for submitting your issue.

Could you please try the following and let me know if it resolves the issue?

  • Verify integrity of your game files on Steam.
  • Update your drivers, and make sure it’s the latest version
  • Update your Windows OS. and make sure it’s the latest version

Another user confirmed that updating his AMD Radeon drivers 20.8.2 to 20.8.3 beta drivers fixed the issue.

One more user managed to fix the crashes by just turning off his anti-virus. So if you are running a third-party antivitus then try turning it off then launch the game.

If you are using Windows Defender instead of a third-party AV then there is no way to turn if off. But you can add Crusader Kings 3 on the exceptions list of Windows Defender:

  • Go to Windows 10 settings
  • Click on Update & Security
  • Select Windows Security from the left sidebar
  • Click on Virus & threat protection
  • Under Virus & threat protection click on Manage settings
  • Under Exclusions click on Add or remove exclusions
  • Click on Add an exclusion
  • Select File
  • Select the .exe or executable file of Crusader Kings 3
  • Restart your PC

Here is the link to the original post.

If these don’t work for you then you can submit a ticket to the support or you can post your issue on the official Crusader Kings 3 Forums.

If you think this guide had helped you then let us know in the comment section below. Also, If you have found a fix that is guaranteed to work then also you can comment below. We will put it on this article. Good luck!

That’s all folks!
