UNetbootin is a popular Windows utility to create bootable USB flash drives for Ubuntu and other Linux distributions.

At times UNnetbootin is not working on Windows 10, and this is usually followed by Failed to start error.

The full error reads Windows failed to start A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. Unfortunately, the error message does not give much to work with.

This error is usually triggered if the Live USB was not created properly, and in this guide, we’ll show you how to fix this issue.

How do I fix UNetbootin error?

In this article

  • How do I fix UNetbootin error?
  • 1. Change BIOS Setup
  • 2. Disable Secure Boot
  • 3. Disable Fast Startup
  • 4. Create a new Live USB
  • 5. Check ISO files for error
  • 6. Create bootable drive with Rufus
  • 7. Fix Windows bootloader using Windows 10 USB

1. Change BIOS Setup

The reliable workaround for the UNetbootin Windows failed to start error is to modify your BIOS setup as shown below.

1. Press the Windows key + I to open Settings.

2. Go to Update & Security.

unetbootin-not-working

3. Open the Recovery tab from the left pane.

Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause

4. Scroll down to Advanced startup and click the Restart Now button.

5. After the Restart, select the Troubleshoot option.

Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause

7. Under Advanced options, choose UEFI firmware settings.

Some PC issues are hard to tackle, especially when it comes to missing or corrupted system files and repositories of your Windows.
Be sure to use a dedicated tool, such as Fortect, which will scan and replace your broken files with their fresh versions from its repository.

8. Confirm the restart. This will allow you to enter BIOS on your Windows 10 PC.

9. After entering the BIOS, open the Boot tab.

10. Set UEFI/BIOS Boot Mode to Legacy.

11. Save the changes and exit BIOS.

Restart your PC and try to boot with the live USB. Check if the UNetbootin not working in Windows 10 error is resolved.

2. Disable Secure Boot

  1. Power off your PC. Restart and then start pressing F2 to access the BIOS.
  2. In the BIOS, open the Security tab.
  3. Highlight and choose Default Secure boot on and set it as Disabled.
  4. Save the changes and exit BIOS.
  5. Reboot the computer with live USB connected and check if the failed to start UNetbootin error is resolved.

If the error persists, disable Fast startup in Windows 10. Fast Startup is a feature designed to reduce boot time. However, it prevents the computer from completely shutting down, which can lead to compatibility issues.

3. Disable Fast Startup

  1. Press the Windows key and type cmd.
  2. Now select Run as administrator.
  3. In the Command Prompt window, type the following command and hit Enter:
    Powercfg -h off
  4. This will turn off Fast Startup. Reboot the computer and check for any improvements.

4. Create a new Live USB

One of the common reasons for Windows failing to start – A recent hardware or software change might be the cause is a corrupted Live USB drive created using UNetbootin.

To make sure the Live USB was created properly, create a new bootable drive using the existing ISO file. This would eliminate any chances of error that may have triggered due to missing or corrupt files in the drive.

5. Check ISO files for error

If the UNetbootin is still not working after creating a new live USB, check your ISO image for errors. Incomplete download or corrupted files may cause the installation to file.

Download the latest version of the ISO image available from the official source. Then create a new bootable drive and check for any improvements.

Alternatively, try using boot repair software. If you are experiencing an error on an existing installation, boot repair tools can fix computer booting issues and repair corrupted files.

6. Create bootable drive with Rufus

  1. Download Rufus from the official website.
  2. Make sure you have the latest ISO installed, and the USB is connected to your PC.
  3. Launch the Rufus application.
  4. Select your flash drive under the device.
  5. Next, choose your ISO, partition scheme, and target system as BIOS or UEFI.
  6. Choose the Format option and leave the other options as default.
  7. Click Start to create a bootable drive.

Rufus is a popular utility to create bootable USB flash drives. If UNetbootin is not working, Rufus is an excellent alternative with a uncomplicated interface.

7. Fix Windows bootloader using Windows 10 USB

  1. Make sure you have the Windows 10 installation media-ready. If not, create a Windows 10 bootable flash drive and then proceed.
  2. Boot from the media.
  3. Choose Repair Your Computer.
  4. Choose the Troubleshoot option.
    Unetbooting not working Windows 10
  5. Next, select Advanced Option and choose Command Prompt.
  6. In the Command Prompt, type the following command one by one and hit enter:
    diskpart
    sel disk 0
    list vol
  7. Make sure the EFI System Partition is using the FAT32 file system.
  8. Run the following command to assign a drive letter to the partition that is not in use.
    sel vol <number of volume>
    assign letter <drive letter>:
    Exit
  9. To repair the boot record, run the following command:
    Cd /d <drive letter>: EFIMicrosoftBoot
    Bootrec /fixBoot
  10. Wait for the command to find and fix issues with the bootloader. Restart the PC once the repair is complete.

The UNetbootin not working in Windows 10 Failed to start error is triggered due to faulty bootable drive or corrupted ISO image. Try changing the BIOS setup to fix the error. If not, use an alternative flash drive creator utility like Rufus.

sudo apt-get install extlinux

https://ubuntu.com/download/desktop

rus-linux.net/MyLDP/consol/dd.html.

smartctl -i /dev/sdb1

smartctl 7.0 2018-12-30 r4883 [x86_64-linux-4.15.0-20-generic] (local build)

umount /dev/sdb1

dd bs=4M if=/home/my-pc/Downloads/ubuntu-18.04.2-desktop-amd64.iso of=/dev/sdb

476+0 records in

476+0 records out

1996488704 bytes (2,0 GB, 1,9 GiB) copied, 184,845 s, 10,8 MB/s

fdisk -l /dev/sdb
Disk /dev/sdb: 14,7 GiB, 15792896000 bytes, 30845500 sectors

Units: sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes

dd if=/путь/к/образу of=/dev/флешка bs=10M; sync

As I don’t have access to a usb or CD, I have tried to frugal install ubuntu onto my HDD, using Unetbootin. Once turning on I find the dual boot menu to select the OS, and attempt to boot Ubuntu, with no avail. An error appears saying

Windows failed to start.A recent hardware or software problem might be
the case.

It then says File:

ubnldr.mbr status: 0xc00007B.

Does anyone know a solution?

It is either a bug or incompatibility in Unetbootin. Rather than try and fix it, it would be easier to buy or borrow a USB flash or CD drive and use that to install. Or, if you really want an install in Windows, use VirtualBox.

Try (hd0,0): FAT16: No UBNLDR

Try (hd0,1): NTFS5: _

https://bugs.launchpad.net/unetbootin/+bug/283743

GUID Unetbootin.

https://askubuntu.com/questions/517574/unetbootin-ubnldr-mbr-error-during-boot-up

Hello, I booted Linux Mint with my desktop computer without error via UNetbootin on my hard drive, and I liked the OS, so I tried to boot it on my laptop, using the same method. I downloaded the ISO file, and mounted it to my hard drive with UNetbootin, and rebooted my laptop. I came to the Windows 10 boot options screen, and selected the UNetbootin option. I waited a few seconds, and an error screen displays.
Here is the error:

Windows Boot Manager

Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause.
To fix the problem:

1. Insert your Windows installation disc and restart your computer.
2. Choose your language settings, and then click «Next.»
3. Click «repair your computer.»

If you don’t have this disc, contact your system administrator or computer
manufacturer for assistance.

File: ubnldr.mbr

file is missing or contains errors.

What I do not understand is why the exact same steps on my desktop are successful, while my laptop produces this error. My laptop’s specs are definitely able to handle linux, so I don’t see how that is the issue. Could it be that my desktop has legacy boot enabled and my laptop has UEFI enabled? I don’t see how the hardware interface could be the issue as Linux can boot with UEFI right? I would like to get Linux Mint running on my laptop. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

I have this budget (read: cheapo) laptop, a Schneider SCL141-CTP, with an Intel Atom X5 Z-8350 SoC, 2 measly gigs of RAM and a ridiculously small 32GB eMMC SSD, that’s running Windows 10 Home, and will soon be left on the platform when the 19H1 big update shows up, because I’ll never manage to clear enough free space to satisfy Microsoft’s requirements.

I’ve been wanting to install Linux on this laptop because I’m fed up no end with Windows, which barely works on such modest hardware, but all my attempts have proven unfruitful.

After a lot of hemming and hawing, I managed to shrink the C drive by 2GB using diskpart, formatted the newly created partition as FAT32, and used UNetBootIn to put the latest Debian-based Slax 9 distro on it, hoping to boot from it and run it live for a while, just to make sure it would fit my needs, before installing it for good.

Nowhere in the UNetBootIN window did I find the option you can have in Rufus to choose between GPT and MBR.

Problem is, this PC has UEFI, and though the UNetBootIN partition does show in the boot menu, selecting it and pressing Enter gets me an error message saying that a boot file is damaged or can’t be read, or something like that, and only offers me to boot from Windows.

The file in question is, without surprise, ubnldr.mbr.

I tried to add it manually to the UEFI boot menu by pointing the menu at the correct file path, but it can’t be found; instead, I’m proposed another 32-bit Linux loader that I’m not even sure is in the Slax files at all, «ia32-something».

No «ubnldr», just «ia32», and I can’t go deeper into the tree line, it stops there.

I’ve tried to disable UEFI completely, hoping against hope that the PC would let me boot from the Slax partition.

Fat chance of that.

I can boot from Windows alright, so the laptop is fully operable, but I’ve got a (momentarily) useless 2GB partition containg Slax, and eating at what little free space I have.

So here i am feeling like a loser after failing to install liquidfeedback on ubuntu and installing debian on a win 7 computer.

So taking a time out of one day and trying another google search MAY help

So i come across
http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/

UNetbootin allows you to create bootable Live USB drives for Ubuntu, Fedora, and other Linux distributions without burning a CD.

WISH ME LUCK

so it failed and get an  .mbr error . so now i have a failed debian install and a failed ubootin install when i start  my comp

I had tried using the iso i had already downloaded.

This time i am going to use the netinstall . So in unetbootin i choose the distro debian and stable and clicked ok
it started to dowload initird.gz toc:unetbtinubninit from  ftp.debian.org/debian/installer
maybe i had chosen the wrong distro and unetbootin is downloading the right ones

so the error message is

File: ubnldr.mbr
Status: 0xc000000f
Info: The selected entry could not be loaded because the application is missing or corrupt.

Im trying to install Ubuntu 18.4 on my Hp Notebook. I am on windows 10. Im using unetbootin to install the ubuntu 18.04 iso from my hard drive as i dont have a blank disc or usb. When i reboot and select unetbootin i get this error.
P.S i already disabled my secure boot.

File: ubnldr.mbr
status: 0xc000007b
Info: The application or operating system couldn’t be loaded because a required file is missing or contains errors.

Any idea how to fix this?
