    Launch Fails with Error: «Cannot connect to the Citrix XenApp Server. Protocol Driver Error.»

    Solution

    Possible Solution 1:

    NOTE: This solution only applies if the Citrix ADC/Gateway version is lower than the following: 11.0.70.16, 11.1.55.13, 12.0.53.22, no versions of 12.1 are affected

    .

    MBF mode is enabled on ADC

    ADC has the support for DTLS with MBF with all the builds for the 12.0/12.1/13.0 series. In the 11.1 series, builds prior to 11.1 52.x doesn’t support DTLS with MBF, and builds starting from 52.x has the support for DTLS with MBF. MBF must be disabled to make DTLS work on builds prior to 11.1 52.x.

    Before disabling MBF, be sure that your architecture and configuration on ADC allow you to disabled this feature.

    To disable MBF, on your ADC GUI,
    1. Go to Configuration > System > Settings
    2. Click on Configure Modes. Uncheck MBF. Click OK to validate.

    Possible Solution 2:

    UDP port 2598 is blocked between ADC SNIP and VDA. If you have a security device, like a firewall between your ADC SNIP and VDA who do not allow UDP on port 2598, this error message will be raised.

    Possible Solution 3:

    DTLS traffic MTU is lower or greater than 1500. This is a specific issue known by Citrix support. The fix will is available on release 11.1 55.x and 12.0 53.x or higher.

    I’m going to preface this with: I have no access to the Citrix Presentation server. I have no training in Citrix. My googling tells me that this is an issue on the other side, however, they are insisting it’s an issue with our desktops. This is also kind of long and convoluted, sorry.

    We have access to another facility’s EMR, via Citrix. This arrangement has worked very well for quite a while, although, they haven’t let me know about some changes over the years until after they started affecting staff here.

    We had a complete system down emergency a few weeks ago, due to a transformer outside the clinic exploding. Since that time, we’ve had a ton of users having issues connecting to the other facility’s Citrix farm. 99% of them get this error:

    Google tells me that this on the server side. The staff over the servers told me to delete the user’s profile from their computer and that should fix it. 

    I can’t really delete that without causing a big fuss, though. On a whim, I noticed that one of the user’s had a folder redirection error, they weren’t owner of their home folder. When I fixed that, and deleted the ICAClient folder out of their %appdata% folder, they were able to launch the Citrix app. Until they logged out and back in. Then the error came back. Deleting the ICAClient folder doesn’t seem to help any more.

    Also, to make things really strange, if people log in via our VDI system, it works fine, most of the time.

    I’m stuck, any help is appreciated.

    Recommendation #3:

    If the /forceinstall switch doesn’t fix the Protocol Driver Error/Error 1046 issue, the Cleanup Utility may still be something to try as even with versions 1909 and greater of Workspace there may be remnants of older/corrupt installations that may affect performance.

    If the workstation is still exhibiting the issue, next verify that the following Registry key is set to True:

    • Key location: HKLMSOFTWAREWow6432NodePoliciesCitrixICA ClientEngineLockdown ProfilesAll RegionsLockdownLogonLocal Credentials
    • String Name (REG_SZ): LegacyLocalUserNameAndPassword
    • Data: True

    Test again.

    Recommendation #4:

    If the problem persists, try increasing the following timeout values in the registry:

    • Key location: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREWow6432nodeCitrixICA Client
    • Value Name (REG_DWORD): VdLoadUnLoadTimeOut
    • Data (in Decimal): 5

    The default for VdLoadUnLoadTimeOut is 1 second, this increases it to 5 seconds. Attempt reconnection. If the problem persists, try increasing this value to 10, 15, and 20 to see if the issue continues.

    Issue: When users launch applications from Web Interface, they get an error message “Protocol Driver Error….”  OR “there is no xenapp server configured for this application”.

    This error is bit confusing, as the the applications are in fact published from valid servers. The error message varies with the Citrix client version. If Citrix receiver is installed, it would say  “protocol driver error”, older versions of citrix clients report the other confusing message “there is no XenApp server configured at the mentioned address”.  (In my case the same applications worked fine when launched internally without coming through the CAG. )

    Troubleshooting:

    Here are the likely reasons for this error and how to troubleshoot:

    1) STA servers configured in the WebInterface is not matching to the STA entries in CAG. Verify the STA server entries and make sure they are exactly the same. Note that, more than one farm can use STA server from one farm, as long as the WebInterface can talk to the STA servers(best practice is to have at least one STA server from each farm configured)

    2) Verify CAG is able to reach the XenApp servers in the farm via ports 1494 or 2598(if session reliability is enabled).

    3) If you are using provisioning services or template or cloning to spin up XenApp servers, verify the UID of the servers are unique. It is possible that all servers may  be running with same UID.

    4) If session reliability is enabled, XTE service should be in running state.

    there is a problem with the clients configuration, or there is possibly a network connection problem.  If you are getting this error “Citrix Protocol Driver Error” try the following steps to resolve the problem

    – Find out what servers belong in that published application and test connectivity to each one.  Log in to the citrix admin console and locate the published application that the client is trying to connect to, Now note down all the server names that are in that published app.  Go back to the client and try the following on every server from the command prompt (Replace server1 with the name of your server)

    ping each %server% > Do you get a reply? If not check the server, has it crashed, is it turned off??

    From the command prompt type  “telnet %server% 1494”     If the screen goes black and says ICA then connectivity is okay. This is the port that ICA runs on. If the screen does not go black then you have a connectivity problem.  Try to reboot the server, check if there is a firewall between the client and the server, the port 1494 could be getting blocked

    Can you connect to the server via RDP ??

    – Next thing to check if the published application is enabled. Log in to the citrix admin console and locate the published application, make sure it is enabled  Sounds silly but it happens. If it is disabled clients will get the error “Citrix Protocol Driver Error”  Also are there servers in the published application that are offline?? If yes take them out of the app as this can cause a problem.

    – Is there a firewall between the client and the server?? If yes make sure port 1604 is open to all servers in the published application.  This port will be used if the published application is load balanced.  The client will also need to communicate with the citrix master browser on port 1604. To find out what server is the master browser do the following

    In citrix metaframe 1.8 and earlier versions log on to any server in the farm and go to the command prompt and type in qserver  now look for a server that has an M  next to it,  This server will be the master browser.

    In Citrix metaframe XP / Presentation server 3.0 and newer versions log in to the citrix admin console and right click on the root “Where it says the name of your farm” and click on properties, now click on zones, search for the servers which are in your published application.  Are they all in the same zone?? If not it will be a good idea to move them in to the same zone.  Now in this zone there should be at least 1 master and 2 backup browser servers.

    – Install the latest microsoft and citrix hotfixes.  In my experience if you install citrix and dont install any hotfixes you are going to run in to lots of problems with just about everything including this problem “Citrix Protocol Driver Error”.  Run microsoft windows update, Open internet explorer and click on tools > windows update and follow the prompts.  Visit www.citrix.com and download the latest hotfixes for your version of citrix and install them.

    – Are clients having problems connecting via secure gateway 3.0?? If yes install citrix hotfix SGE300W003

    -Check the eventvwr on each server in the published app, this might give you an idea what the problem is.

    -Windows Services,  Log on to each server and make sure the “IMA, Metaframe COM, and all other citrix” windows services are running, to do this click on start > run type in  services.msc and enter.  If a service has stopped it will cause the citrix protocol driver error

    -Is the firewall port 1604 (Citrix load balancing port) open between your client and the primary data collector / master browser for the zone? If not it needs to be.

    -Have you enabled session reliability?? Try disabling it. If it is enabled it could force your clients to use a different port to connect to citrix servers,  a firewall could be blocking this connection.  If the firewall is not blocking the connection install the latest citrix hotfixes as this is what caused my problem once with the citrix protocol driver error.

    -Verify the citrix server has no licensing problems,  Can it hand out Terminal server licenses and citrix licenses??  Log on to the licensing servers and make sure the licenses have not ran out and you can also see the citrix server polling in to get licenses.

    -Do your clients go through a proxy to contact the browser servers? If yes check the proxy, also test connecting to the published app not going through the proxy

    -Has the client got any local firewall software?? Check and temporary disable any existing firewalls just to make sure.  Do you have VPN software installed?? Try disabling this as well, I have checkpoints VPN software installed on my laptop and it causes a problem when the windows services are running, so i simply stop them.

    Tips To Avoid “Citrix Protocol Driver Error”

    Follow these tips to help avoid you getting the error “Citrix Protocol Driver Error”

    -If possible the server that acts as a browser server should be on the same network as the client,  it is possible that network latency or even network problems can cause the error “Citrix Protocol Driver Error”

    -If possible place the browser server in the same zone as the data collector.

    -Install the latest citrix hotfixes on your servers,  I usually install the latest hotfixes on one of our servers, then leave for a week or two and then roll out to our other servers.

    -Make sure all required firewall ports are open  “Citrix ICA Port 1494” “Citrix Load Balancing Port 1604” “Session Reliability Port (Set in citrix management console”

    I’m going to preface this with: I have no access to the Citrix Presentation server. I have no training in Citrix. My googling tells me that this is an issue on the other side, however, they are insisting it’s an issue with our desktops. This is also kind of long and convoluted, sorry.

    We have access to another facility’s EMR, via Citrix. This arrangement has worked very well for quite a while, although, they haven’t let me know about some changes over the years until after they started affecting staff here.

    We had a complete system down emergency a few weeks ago, due to a transformer outside the clinic exploding. Since that time, we’ve had a ton of users having issues connecting to the other facility’s Citrix farm. 99% of them get this error:

    Google tells me that this on the server side. The staff over the servers told me to delete the user’s profile from their computer and that should fix it. 

    I can’t really delete that without causing a big fuss, though. On a whim, I noticed that one of the user’s had a folder redirection error, they weren’t owner of their home folder. When I fixed that, and deleted the ICAClient folder out of their %appdata% folder, they were able to launch the Citrix app. Until they logged out and back in. Then the error came back. Deleting the ICAClient folder doesn’t seem to help any more.

    Also, to make things really strange, if people log in via our VDI system, it works fine, most of the time.

    I’m stuck, any help is appreciated.

    First, you must confirm your complete authorization to use the app. And then, you should see if the app has the most recent update.

    Коллеги подскажите пожалуйста, не запускаются приложения на клиентах ситрикса с операционкой Windows XP sp2 — sp3. на других системах win 2k/2k3/2k8/2k8r2/7/ опубликованные приложения запускаются, на XP после удачного входа на веб интерфейс, или с толстого клиента, когда пытаешься запустить приложение зависает и вываливатся с ошибкой: Не удается подключиться к серверу Citrix XenApp «Ошибка драйвера протокола»

    где и какие логи смотреть подскажите пожалуйста.

    переставил клиента и текст ошибки изменился на «Серверов Citrix XenApp» с указанным адресом не существует.
    в этоже время с тачке в этой же сети но на win 2k3 спокойно можно запустить любое опубликованной приложение.

      Антивирус попробуй тоже временно отключи (особенно актуально для антивирусов с функцией фаейрвола).

    Issue: When users launch applications from Web Interface, they get an error message “Protocol Driver Error….”  OR “there is no xenapp server configured for this application”.

    This error is bit confusing, as the the applications are in fact published from valid servers. The error message varies with the Citrix client version. If Citrix receiver is installed, it would say  “protocol driver error”, older versions of citrix clients report the other confusing message “there is no XenApp server configured at the mentioned address”.  (In my case the same applications worked fine when launched internally without coming through the CAG. )

    Troubleshooting:

    Here are the likely reasons for this error and how to troubleshoot:

    1) STA servers configured in the WebInterface is not matching to the STA entries in CAG. Verify the STA server entries and make sure they are exactly the same. Note that, more than one farm can use STA server from one farm, as long as the WebInterface can talk to the STA servers(best practice is to have at least one STA server from each farm configured)

    2) Verify CAG is able to reach the XenApp servers in the farm via ports 1494 or 2598(if session reliability is enabled).

    3) If you are using provisioning services or template or cloning to spin up XenApp servers, verify the UID of the servers are unique. It is possible that all servers may  be running with same UID.

    4) If session reliability is enabled, XTE service should be in running state.

    Having difficulties accessing accessing Citrix Server / launching applications from the outside thru firewall.

    I can get to the Cirtix Logon Screen from the outside but after inicial login / authentication when I try and launch application It does not function appropriatly. Cannot lauch any applications. Receive this error.  (Unable to lauch your application. Contact your heldesk with the following information. Cannot connect to the Citrix Xenapp server. protocol Driver Error)

    The Website/Citrix is also using SSL Cert for HTTPS.

    Having some issues setting this up correctly «Manage secure client access» in «Citrix Access Management Console».

    I can access the Citrix environment from inside the firewall on the local network and access / launch applications without any issues running Citrix Apps from internal. Issue is only coming from public side.

    Also only port 80 and 443 is open on our juniper firewall.

    The Server is running (Windows 2008 Server 64-Bit, Citrix XenApp 5.0 Advanced Edition.

    The Server is connected to local network 192.168.x.x all of the Cirtix Modules / Applications are running a on 1 single Server/Box.

    Example: Private IP Internal 192.168.x.x NATs to 170.2.2.2

    So I’m troubleshooting an issue with our XA 6.5 servers (3) and they’re streamed so all the same image. At one point, only 1 of the servers was displaying the issue now all 3 are. I’ve been looking into what changed, and I don’t believe it was a Citrix configuration change but having trouble proving and tracking.

    The reason is we also have a Netscaler, and external clients that come through that have no issue launching applications. The internal clients all receive protocol driver error, so in my mind the XA servers are working as expected. We have 2 different web interfaces (5.4), one for external and 1 for internal.

    The XTE log is showing a strange error also that I’m not familiar with.
    [client ip address] client denied by server configuration: 127.0.0.1:3389 CH0 ACCESS DENIED to destination address 127.0.0.1:3389.

    I don’t know why the port is 3389 instead of 2598 or 1494. Looking for some help in direction on where else to look, thanks in advance.

    Having difficulties accessing accessing Citrix Server / launching applications from the outside thru firewall.

    I can get to the Cirtix Logon Screen from the outside but after inicial login / authentication when I try and launch application It does not function appropriatly. Cannot lauch any applications.     Issue: When users launch applications from Web Interface, they get an error message “Protocol Driver Error….”  OR “there is no xenapp server configured for this application”.

    This error is bit confusing, as the the applications are in fact published from valid servers. The error message varies with the Citrix client version. If Citrix receiver is installed, it would say  “protocol driver error”, older versions of citrix clients report the other confusing message “there is no XenApp server configured at the mentioned address”.  (In my case the same applications worked fine when launched internally without coming through the CAG. )

    Troubleshooting:

    Here are the likely reasons for this error and how to troubleshoot:

    1) STA servers configured in the WebInterface is not matching to the STA entries in CAG. Verify the STA server entries and make sure they are exactly the same. Note that, more than one farm can use STA server from one farm, as long as the WebInterface can talk to the STA servers(best practice is to have at least one STA server from each farm configured)

    2) Verify CAG is able to reach the XenApp servers in the farm via ports 1494 or 2598(if session reliability is enabled).

    3) If you are using provisioning services or template or cloning to spin up XenApp servers, verify the UID of the servers are unique. It is possible that all servers may  be running with same UID.

    4) If session reliability is enabled, XTE service should be in running state.
