Common Reasons Why Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 not Recognized

Have been using Scarlett 2i2, but all of a sudden it can’t be recognized? The hardware is working fine, but the software isn’t! There are two common reasons why you bumped into this problem – compatibility issues and missing drivers.

Compatibility Issues

Did you have an OS update lately? Have you checked if your version of the Focusrite Scarlett is compatible with the version of your operating system? Go to the Support page of the company and check whether your Scarlett 2i2 will work well with the operating system that you have. Whether you are using either Windows or iOS, Focusrite provides to you all the information you need.

For Mac users, for example, a certain iteration of the latest macOS 10.15 (Catalina) may somehow alter the performance of your hardware. Though their website says the Scarlett 2i2 is compatible, it’s still important to check not just the audio interface, but all the rest of the hardware/software setup. Check the DAW that you’re using, e.g., Ableton Live, Pro Tools, etc.

On the other hand, for Windows, Scarlett 3rd Gen ranges including 2i2 is compatible with the latest Windows 11 21H2. Hence, before doing any upgrade/downgrade of your operating system, make sure that you won’t have any compatibility issues.

Problems with the Drivers

For most times, having an update to the software is a good thing because patches are made to solve existing issues. However, for some reason sometimes having a driver update seems to be more devastating as it may cause another difficulty. If the recent problem encountered is due to a software update, perhaps a downgrade will do the trick.

There is a certain thread in the Cakewalk forum solved this problem with a downgrade of the Focusrite Control. The problem is that, on Focusrite’s website, some versions aren’t there. So, what you’re going to do is contact support for assistance. They are more than willing to give you the best customer service that they can offer.

Solution for Windows Users

Most PC users have the luxury of accessing information online in order to solve their problems. Yet, some solutions offered aren’t applicable. Hence, this compilation is made.

No Hardware Connected

Go to Device Manager, but do a right-click on the Windows Icon (this is in Windows 10). A pop-up window will appear displaying all the devices. You can find Focusrite 2i2 under Sound, Video & Game Controllers, and Focusrite Audio. You should be able to see the interface unless your connection is broken. (And, in this case, you must literally try to use new cable wire.)

Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 Not Recognized

If your computer has detected it, look for the latest version of the Focusrite Control. Make sure it’s installed on the C: drive of your computer. Then, check Focusrite Control Server by opening your File Explorer, then, Local Disk (C:)>Program Files>Focusrite>Focusrite Control Server.

Now, look for the ControlServer.exe and enable Run as Administrator. This should be the ultimate solution to this, otherwise, you have to contact their support.

No Hardware Detected

To see if Focusrite Control Server is running, you go to the Control Panel (set View by: to Small Icons) to check Administrative Tools>Services>Focusrite Control Server. Once you find the Focusrite Control, select it and hit the Start hyperlink on the upper left of the window. (If you can see the Start hyperlink, that means, the item isn’t running. Otherwise, why you can see the Stop and Restart hyperlinks). Restart and see if the problem goes away.

If you are running third-party antivirus, make sure that it’s not blocking the Focusrite Control Server. But, if you only have Windows Defender, you should have this problem. If you really keep the antivirus running, just put in the exemptions the following:

  • C: > Program Files > Focusrite.
  • C: > Program Files > Focusrite > Server.

Solution for macOS Users

No Hardware Connected

To check whether the audio interface is connected, you have to go to Apple logo>About This Mac>System Report>Hardware>USB, or Thunderbolt. Check the USB Device Tree if you are going to find Focusrite. If you can’t find it, just try to use another cable wire, as you do in Windows to test.

If you can find the 2i2 but it is not recognized by the computer, you have to ensure that it has the latest software. Just like in Windows, let’s check the services: Open Focusrite Control and open Finder. Navigate to Applications>Utilities>Activity Monitor>FocusriteControlServer. Double-click and it will open a new window. Hit the Quit button.

Note: FocusriteControlServer will not stop, instead it will just stay in the Activity Monitor .

After this process, you should be able to see the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 in the Focusrite Control. If not, check out this YouTube video for the simplest way to fix the problem.

No Hardware Detected

As mentioned earlier, the compatibility of the Focusrite Control depends on the version of the macOS. If after all your efforts to follow the instructions in the previous section, Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 is not recognized still, try to manually activate the service.

To do so, go to Finder>Applications. Look for the Focusrite Control, right-click on it and go to Show Package Contents > Contents > Library > Login Items. Double-click on FocusriteControlServer. When you open your Focusrite Control, your interface should now be recognized.

Then, you have to put Focusrite Control Server under the exemptions of your third-party firewall. Go to System Preferences > Security and Privacy > Firewall > Firewall Options. Then, from the previous window, drag the FocusriteControlServer to the Firewall Options, then Allow incoming connections. This should allow your interface to be seen in the control.

Conclusion

Getting to the connectivity problem in the Focusrite Control is really frustrating. And, it’s a very common problem for Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 not recognized. Basically, you’ll get either the ‘No hardware connected’ or the ‘No hardware detected’ error. Bad news first:

Focusrite discontinued the support for the Saffire 56 from Windows 10 build 1903 due to device incompatibilities in the firewire interface and says «it will not work on versions >= 1903″.
That’s not a good start for that.

Good news:

Regardless of this fact my audio interface seems to work very stable and reliable on my windows 10 machine now.

My PC had no firewire inputs on the board so I bought a delock PCI firewire card. The brand is not important, important was the fact that Focusrite supports only VIA and Texas Instruments chipsets on the firewire interface.
I was lucky because I had the Texas Instruments chipset and also the card was rated for 400 mbps, just like my saffire needed.

Beside that I could not work with the
Saffire Mix Control nor record anything. The device appeared to be there but only as a non working zombie. I knew from the past that the interface was working on Windows 7 and cannot remember whether it did on 10.

After testing all of those focusrite articles and some threads on various forums I found an issue with microsofts driver selection in the device manager for my firewire card.

Looking at the device manager for the firewire card I noticed something strange:

Seems to work and looking good but then I said «wait, wasn’t my firewire chipset’s brand Texas Instruments and not VIA?»

Windows insisted it was a generic VIA chipset so I right clicked onto it, went to settings/properties, picked the «driver» tab, selected «Update driver» then selected the «locate driver on my machine», then clicked «pick one from a list» and got basically two different options:

  • OHCI compliant VIA 1394 Host Controller
  • OHCI compliant 1394 Host Controller

I selected the non VIA version, installed it and that fixed my problem. The Saffire Mix Control was then able to detect the saffire without any issues and I was able to record instantly.

Firewire is quite old and I guess since windows already provides the drivers for firewire, the PCI card manufacturer relied on windows for matching it’s chipset signature to the necessary driver. Either the PCI card manufacturer or microsoft botched things up picking a driver that only «seemed» to work.

If you have the same issue I hope it will help my fellow friends in the firewire hell :)

Small disclaimer: The process of selecting another driver might use a different wording, I recommend searching for a guide on how to do this if you are stuck or not sure. My windows machine uses a non English language so the guide above might be not entirely accurate on the wording you might find on your machine.

Много раз писал уже, как решил такую проблему.
Пусть будет вынесено в отдельную тему.

Итак.
Взял 2i2 2gen, долго возиться пришлось с установкой.
В процессе установки драйвера система материлась на то, что у драйвера на карточку отсутствует цифровая подпись. Соответственно карточка не подключалась.
Система W7 x64.

После установки SP1 запускаем это рекомендованное от фокусрайта обновление винды (ссылка ниже, обновление безопасности). Теперь обновление безопасности ставится!
После перезагрузок переустанавливаем драйвер фокусрайта: сносим всё связанное с ним,удаляем устройство из системы в диспетчере устройств, после чего с нуля устанавливаем драйвер (теперь система уже не матерится на неподписанный драйвер), снова перезагружаемся. После перезугрузки подключаем карту. Всё заработало в итоге.

Но как сказал, вышеупомянутое обновление не встало, пока я не обновил систему полностью до SP1.

п/с: если Service Pack 1 уже установлен, то просто качай обновление по вышеупомянутой ссылке и ставь его. Если не встала, значит сначала обнови винду до SP1 (или освежи через центр обновления виндоус) и попробуй снова.
На нелицинзионной винде никаких проблем с обновлением через «Центр обновления виндоус» не будет.

Крайняя мера: переустановить систему (сменить на 8-ку или 10-ку).
Если карта работала, но перестала работать (матерится на драйвер, но обновления не помогают), то либо удалите драйвер и установите более раннюю версию, либо «обнулите» систему.

Windows

On Windows systems, you can look in Device Manager to check your interface is being listed correctly. To access this:

Right-Click on the ‘Start‘ icon > Device Manager.

If your i nterface is showing correctly in Device Manager but Focusrite Control still displays No Hardware Connected, please complete the following instructions :

1) Ensure you have the latest version of Focusrite Control from the Downloads page or from your Focusrite.com account .

2) Ensure that Focusrite Control has been installed to the main C: drive of your computer. Installing Focusrite Control to a secondary drive can cause issues. If in doubt, please reinstall Focusrite Control using the default options.

3) Check that ‘ Focusrite Control Server ’ is running. To do this:

macOS

If you are a user of a; Clarett Thunderbolt, Saffire or Red interface, on macOS 10.13+ please see the following article in addition to the below steps:

To check if the interface is appearing as connected:

So I updated the Focusrite Control Software to the latest version which is 2.3.3. No it shows No Hardware Connected when I bring it up. Everything is still working with the routing but there is no visual of it if I need to change anything. So the hardware is working but not the software. I went to the Focusrite site and with through there trouble shooting on the subject. All is listed fine on my computer. Also tried another usb port and it does come up once. But if you close the Focusrite Control it shows up No Hardware Connected the next time you open it. Tried turning the anti virus off as well and no luck. It was all working prior to the update. I am using Windows 10 pro. Have put in a request with them but it usually takes a little while to hear back and thought somebody might know what to do.

Is the unit fully online before you open MixControl? I forget if it updates itself if it comes online first, but it does when you power the unit off.

After checking the usb cable ,I recommend to do a full new driver Installation .
First Disconnect the Interface -desinstallation —
New Start —
Installation of the drlver —
Nee Start —
Connecting the Interface

I tried installing and reinstalling several times and the same thing. Well at least I am still able to use it but can’t change any of the routing.  Also my computer is always connected to the net.

I am having the same issues after the update to version 2.3.3. I can’t open mix control — it ether crashes or just prompts «no hardware connected». I experience this issue on my Windows 8.1 PC and Windows 10 laptop. I also did all of the troubleshooting provided by Focusrite, in fact it wasn’t even necessary because all my setings were ok according to the instructions.  I really hate this company. Since I bought the Scarlett 18i20 I have encourted notorious problems with playback or just basic things which shouldn’t be a problem — like this one.

My problem is solved. They got back to me today and had me download version 2.3.2. Now it works fine. Try downloading that. I really haven’t had any problems up until downloading the latest version. Let me know if that works for you.

Just found this slightly old thread… I just bought myself a Focusrite Scarlett 18i8, and during installation i experience the exact same problem as described above. And i am wating for support response…

Have been using Scarlett 2i2, but all of a sudden it can’t be recognized? The hardware is working fine, but the software isn’t! There are two common reasons why you bumped into this problem – compatibility issues and missing drivers.

Compatibility Issues

Did you have an OS update lately? Have you checked if your version of the Focusrite Scarlett is compatible with the version of your operating system? Go to the Support page of the company and check whether your Scarlett 2i2 will work well with the operating system that you have. For Mac users, for example, a certain iteration of the latest macOS 10.15 (Catalina) may somehow alter the performance of your hardware. Though their website says the Scarlett 2i2 is compatible, it’s still important to check not just the audio interface, but all the rest of the hardware/software setup. Check the DAW that you’re using, e.g., Ableton Live, Pro Tools, etc.

On the other hand, for Windows, Scarlett 3rd Gen ranges including 2i2 is compatible with the latest Windows 11 21H2. Hence, before doing any upgrade/downgrade of your operating system, make sure that you won’t have any compatibility issues.

Problems with the Drivers

For most times, having an update to the software is a good thing because patches are made to solve existing issues. However, for some reason sometimes having a driver update seems to be more devastating as it may cause another difficulty. If the recent problem encountered is due to a software update, perhaps a downgrade will do the trick.

There is a certain thread in the Cakewalk forum solved this problem with a downgrade of the Focusrite Control. The problem is that, on Focusrite’s website, some versions aren’t there. Solution for Windows Users

Most PC users have the luxury of accessing information online in order to solve their problems. Yet, some solutions offered aren’t applicable. Hence, this compilation is made.

No Hardware Connected

Go to Device Manager, but do a right-click on the Windows Icon (this is in Windows 10). A pop-up window will appear displaying all the devices. You can find Focusrite 2i2 under Sound, Video & Game Controllers, and Focusrite Audio. You should be able to see the interface unless your connection is broken. (And, in this case, you must literally try to use new cable wire.)

Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 Not Recognized

If your computer has detected it, look for the latest version of the Focusrite Control. Make sure it’s installed on the C: drive of your computer. Then, check Focusrite Control Server by opening your File Explorer, then, Local Disk (C:)>Program Files>Focusrite>Focusrite Control Server.

Now, look for the ControlServer.exe and enable Run as Administrator. This should be the ultimate solution to this, otherwise, you have to contact their support.

No Hardware Detected

To see if Focusrite Control Server is running, you go to the Control Panel (set View by: to Small Icons) to check Administrative Tools>Services>Focusrite Control Server. Once you find the Focusrite Control, select it and hit the Start hyperlink on the upper left of the window. (If you can see the Start hyperlink, that means, the item isn’t running. Otherwise, why you can see the Stop and Restart hyperlinks). Restart and see if the problem goes away.

If you are running third-party antivirus, make sure that it’s not blocking the Focusrite Control Server. But, if you only have Windows Defender, you should have this problem. If you really keep the antivirus running, just put in the exemptions the following:

  • C: > Program Files > Focusrite.
  • C: > Program Files > Focusrite > Server.

Solution for macOS Users

No Hardware Connected

To check whether the audio interface is connected, you have to go to Apple logo>About This Mac>System Report>Hardware>USB, or Thunderbolt. Check the USB Device Tree if you are going to find Focusrite. If you can’t find it, just try to use another cable wire, as you do in Windows to test.

If you can find the 2i2 but it is not recognized by the computer, you have to ensure that it has the latest software. Just like in Windows, let’s check the services: Open Focusrite Control and open Finder. Navigate to Applications>Utilities>Activity Monitor>FocusriteControlServer. Double-click and it will open a new window. Hit the Quit button.

Note: FocusriteControlServer will not stop, instead it will just stay in the Activity Monitor .

After this process, you should be able to see the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 in the Focusrite Control. If not, check out this YouTube video for the simplest way to fix the problem.

No Hardware Detected

As mentioned earlier, the compatibility of the Focusrite Control depends on the version of the macOS. If after all your efforts to follow the instructions in the previous section, Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 is not recognized still, try to manually activate the service.

To do so, go to Finder>Applications. Look for the Focusrite Control, right-click on it and go to Show Package Contents > Contents > Library > Login Items. Double-click on FocusriteControlServer. When you open your Focusrite Control, your interface should now be recognized.

Then, you have to put Focusrite Control Server under the exemptions of your third-party firewall. Go to System Preferences > Security and Privacy > Firewall > Firewall Options. Then, from the previous window, drag the FocusriteControlServer to the Firewall Options, then Allow incoming connections. This should allow your interface to be seen in the control.

No matter how many times I reinstall the softwares and drivers, it says «No Hardware Connected» on the Focusrite Control. I have the Scarlett 6i6 and everytime I reinstall it there are issues with the drivers it installs too, but issue being there is only one thing that it tells me to install from the site so what am I to do…?

Edit: I think I fixed it. I reinstalled the software many times and I restarted my computer many times but yesterday what seemed to fix it was; Leaving the interface unplugged from the computer, I installed the Focusrite Control Software and followed the prompts, when it says to restart click restart later, then connect the usb device, then restart. That seemed to have worked for me.

Много раз писал уже, как решил такую проблему.
Пусть будет вынесено в отдельную тему.

Итак.
Взял 2i2 2gen, долго возиться пришлось с установкой.
В процессе установки драйвера система материлась на то, что у драйвера на карточку отсутствует цифровая подпись. Соответственно карточка не подключалась.
Система W7 x64.

После установки SP1 запускаем это рекомендованное от фокусрайта обновление винды (ссылка ниже, обновление безопасности). Теперь обновление безопасности ставится!
После перезагрузок переустанавливаем драйвер фокусрайта: сносим всё связанное с ним,удаляем устройство из системы в диспетчере устройств, после чего с нуля устанавливаем драйвер (теперь система уже не матерится на неподписанный драйвер), снова перезагружаемся. После перезугрузки подключаем карту. Всё заработало в итоге.

Но как сказал, вышеупомянутое обновление не встало, пока я не обновил систему полностью до SP1.

п/с: если Service Pack 1 уже установлен, то просто качай обновление по вышеупомянутой ссылке и ставь его. Если не встала, значит сначала обнови винду до SP1 (или освежи через центр обновления виндоус) и попробуй снова.
На нелицинзионной винде никаких проблем с обновлением через «Центр обновления виндоус» не будет.

Крайняя мера: переустановить систему (сменить на 8-ку или 10-ку).
Если карта работала, но перестала работать (матерится на драйвер, но обновления не помогают), то либо удалите драйвер и установите более раннюю версию, либо «обнулите» систему.

Windows

On Windows systems, you can look in Device Manager to check your interface is being listed correctly. To access this:

Right-Click on the ‘Start‘ icon > Device Manager.

If your i nterface is showing correctly in Device Manager but Focusrite Control still displays No Hardware Connected, please complete the following instructions :

1) Ensure you have the latest version of Focusrite Control from the Downloads page or from your Focusrite.com account .

2) Ensure that Focusrite Control has been installed to the main C: drive of your computer. Installing Focusrite Control to a secondary drive can cause issues. If in doubt, please reinstall Focusrite Control using the default options.

3) Check that ‘ Focusrite Control Server ’ is running. To do this:

If you are a user of a; Clarett Thunderbolt, Saffire or Red interface, on macOS 10.13+ please see the following article in addition to the below steps:

To check if the interface is appearing as connected:

Click the Apple logo (top left of your screen) > About This Mac > System Report > Hardware > USB, or Thunderbolt.

If your interface is being seen at a hardware level, your interface model will be displayed in the main window as shown below.

If your i nterface is showing correctly in the System report, but Focusrite Control still displays No Hardware Connected, please complete the following instructions:

1) Ensure you have the latest version of Focusrite Control from the Downloads page or your Focusrite.com account.

3) Ensure that the Focusrite Control Server is running, to do this:

Quit Server Mac

The service will not quit and will remain in Activity Monitor. Your interface should now appear in Focusrite Control.

If this does not work, please go to step 4:

4) P lease manually start this server, to do this go to:

FocusriteControlServer

Now please open Focusrite Control and your interface should be recognised.

If you are still unable to see the interface, please Contact Support.

No Hardware Detected

For No Hardware Detected on macOS– click here.

Windows

1) Ensure you have the latest version of Focusrite Control from the Downloads page or from your Focusrite.com account.

2) Ensure that Focusrite Control has been installed to the main C: drive of your computer. Installing Focusrite Control to a secondary drive can cause issues. If in doubt, please reinstall Focusrite Control.

3) Check that ‘ Focusrite Control Server’ is running. To do this:

Please also run the Focusrite Control installation again with your firewall or antivirus disabled. When running the installer, please ensure to right-click the installer and choose Run as Administrator.
