(Dist: Debian 10)
I have a reoccurring error message that mainly pops up when using systemctl (also when installing a package, and occasionally in a few other places that escape me),
Unit -.mount is masked.
Sometimes (depending on what command called the error message) it is more verbose, such as
Error: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.systemd1.UnitMasked: Unit -.mount is masked.
This error doesn’t impede installing packages or any systemd services which are enabled already (and as such are loaded at boot), but using systemctl
or service
to restart, start or stop a service fails. This means I have to reboot the whole server to restart a service, which can be a little annoying.
Trying to unmask the root mount with systemctl unmask -- -.mount
appears to work (nothing is returned), but systemctl status -- -.mount
still outputs the following after:
● -.mount - Root Mount
Loaded: masked (Reason: Unit -.mount is masked.)
Active: active (mounted) since Mon 2019-08-05 15:03:38 AEST; 4h 8min ago
Where: /
What: /dev/sde1
Tasks: 0 (limit: 4915)
Memory: 0B
CGroup: /system.slice/-.mount
Any ideas? I’m don’t want to start from a fresh install for this server, so either I find a fix or just deal with having to restart if I need to reload a service.

I have this message while running apt update
Unit -.mount is masked.
I don’t see any file or link to a service like -.mount.service
in /etc/systemd/system
or /etc/systemd/user
or ~/.config/systemd/user
or under the /lib/systemd
directories.
There is nothing like it in the output of systemctl list units
or systemctl --user list-units
So where is this unit file? OR What is this message about?

On my fresh install of Pop!_OS 19.04 I tried executing sudo apt update
followed by sudo apt upgrade
and this error happened:
Error: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.systemd1.UnitMasked: Unit -.mount is masked.
What is causing this error?
This has never happened before and I’m not sure what would have caused it. I tried using sudo apt autoremove
and this didn’t help.

[SOLVED] How to repair «Unit -.mount is masked.»?
I see this on «sudo upgrade» as well with timedatectrl.
How can I fix this without fresh install?

[SOLVED] Re: How to repair «Unit -.mount is masked.»?
Fri Nov 05, 2021 10:29 am
Yesterday I did «sudo apt-get install python3-opencv» resulting in same errors, but opencv got installed.
I did update and upgrade as well.
This morning on first boot the time was wrong again.
But unlike yesterday execution of «timedatectl» command worked without errors and showed the current time.
I did shutdown the Pi400 and powered it on an hour later.
I expected to see wrong time again, and having to execute timedatectl manually.
But Pi400 booted with current time!
So the issues I had got completely resolved, by one or more of the steps I described.
I also installed ntp and was able to do all commands in this tutorial without issues today:
https://raspberrytips.com/time-sync-raspberry-pi/
P.S:
Not having to do fresh install is really cool.
Especially since I moved my always full 16GB 32bit PiOS Desktop sdcard image yesterday onto a new 13$ 64GB sdcard.
Using gparted now my Pi400 has only 23% used space, enough to do extensive ffmpeg work.

I tried to upgrade searchsploit but it gives me this error:
Error: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.systemd1.UnitMasked: Unit -.mount is masked.
And it gives the same error when I try to upgrade any software.
I tried :
sudo systemctl unmask packagekit.service
sudo systemctl start packagekit.service
But it didn’t work

I had a similar problem. Gparted was open… after closing it, the problem disappeared.
