I tried to save them as a JPEG in photoshop but doesn’t seem to work.
I haven’t figured out how to restore my preferences in Indesign. Seems very complicated.

Could try a different file format, does it have to be a jpeg?
I take it the jpegs load back into Photoshop without problems? Might not be Indesign, Photoshop could be saving dodgy files, could try saving out a jpeg from something like Preview to see if this is the case.

Sorry for necro,
But this worked for us in 2021 to solve bad JPEG exports from Photoshop to InDesign. Toggling Progressive off and switching to Baseline allowed it to import neatly.

Which version of InDesign and OS are you using?
Sounds like a corrupt JPG, can you open it/them in other applications?
Create a fresh JPG with a new image and try Placing that in InDesign. If you have a problem again, maybe try resetting your InDesign preferences: Close InDesign. Then hold down Ctrl + Alt + Shift (Windows) or Cmd + Ctrl + Opt + Shift (Mac), and relaunch InDesign. Respond in the affirmative to the dialog asking if you really want to replace the preferences.

I am encountering the same issue. i work with large format images (clipped PSDs more often than not) for trade show graphics, and this is definitely a bug with CC 2019 and not your image file. The reason I know this is that there is a workaround. It is not an answer to your question per se; but, the only way I have been able to get my work done is to re-install CC 2018, export my InDesign file as an IDML in order to open it and import the image into the file I open in 2018. I hope Adobe fixes this soon.
Adobe, please address this issue. If it were a matter of corrupt image files, they could not be imported into 2018 either.

Finally i can fix it by myself and need a little trick to solve it. First, if you want to know which photo that make it crash, you need to choose Export & Save as to jpg. And it will show you the page contain corrupted jpg which make this trouble. So, if you found that page you can replace the corrupted photo with the new one. And last, try to export to pdf. Good luck!

I was experiencing the same issue. Exporting the InDesign file to jpg’s worked for me. I could easily see which page was causing the problem. I just needed to do an elimination process by removing each image and exporting that page till I knew which one it was. Thanks for the tip bolkiahs!

This issue hppens usually with files saved from apps like whatsapp. Simple trick is open in preview or any othe app that can open it, resave as jpg and import into indesign. works every time

Image will be save as from JPEG to jpg in MS Paint / Photoshop / other application. It will solve this issue. One or some images that is no problem, but more than hundred images what will be the solution. Every image will be separately open in photoshop/mspaint and resave it to JPG format individually.

На сей раз вопрос не совсем по InDesign, но отношение к нему тем не менее имеющий, ибо верстаться предстоит всё равно в нём… Если совсем не к месту вопрос, будьте добреньки, направьте по правильному адресу!
В общем, для некой книги когда-то давно были присланы фотографии с расширением jpg. Человек, который их записывал, с компьютером не слишком дружил и записал их как-то кривовато: часть открывается нормально, часть — нет. InfanView, к примеру, пишет «Can’t file header. Unknown file format», а Photoshop – «Could not complete your request because an unknown or invalid LPEG marker type is found». Возможно, кто-то уже сталкивался с подобной проблемой и сможет помочь? Вдруг есть какие-то программы для восстановления jpeg’ов или ещё что-то такое волшебное? На всякий случай даю ссылку на архив с несколькими файлами для проб (3,43 мб):

Как сохранить страницы или развороты InDesign в JPG

Ошибка при чтении изображения JPEG. Изображение может быть повреждено или несовместимо. Повторно сохраните изображение с другими настройками и попробуйте еще раз.
В окне предупреждения не указано, что это за поврежденный JPG? Сколько файлов JPG помещено в ваш INDD? Если их немного, вы можете потратить несколько минут и с помощью «процесса исключения» начать удалять по 1 JPG за раз и попробовать повторно экспортировать в PDF. Если в INDD много файлов JPG, все равно выполняйте «процесс исключения», НО попробуйте удалить целые страницы. Невозможно сказать, что сломано в JPG без Photoshop, но вы, по крайней мере, можете найти виновника.

Решение
- Закройте файл, открытый в другой версии InDesign.
- Если не удается закрыть файл, принудительно закройте все версии InDesign или перезагрузите компьютер.
- Если вы столкнулись с этой проблемой при сохранении файла, попробуйте изменить название и местоположение файла.

InDesign не удается открыть или сохранить файл, если процесс чтения или записи прерван и невозможно получить доступ к файлу, или он не найден.

Поврежденный файл
В InDesign отображается сообщение об ошибке, если файл поврежден или выполняется автоматическое восстановление файла. Выберите вкладку на основании своего сценария и выполните действия по устранению неполадок, чтобы попытаться восстановить содержимое документа.
Быстрая проверка внешних причин
- Если документ был преобразован в QuarkXPress, Adobe PageMaker или предыдущей версии InDesign, попробуйте выполнить повторное преобразование документа. Если неполадка не устранена, перед повторным преобразованием проверьте исходный документ на повреждения в исходном приложении. Поврежденный документ PageMaker или QuarkXPress вероятнее всего останется поврежденным после преобразования.
- Если вы получили документ по электронной почте, FTP или со съемного носителя (например, компакт-диска), то постарайтесь получить копию иным способом. Или отправьте документ повторно. Поврежденный носитель или возникновение неполадок при передаче файла по электронной почте могут повредить документ. - Попробуйте удалить внешние модули сторонних разработчиков InDesign. Иногда внешние модули могут приводить к повреждению файла. См. раздел Устранение неполадок в работе с внешними модулями сторонних разработчиков InDesign.
- Используйте другой компьютер, чтобы открыть документ в другом системном окружении. Вы также можете удалить переменные, являющиеся причиной проблемы.
- InDesign хранит информацию о внешних модулях, функциях и самом приложении в следующих файлах установок: InDesign, SavedData и InDesign Defaults. - Увеличьте объем доступного пространства на загрузочном диске. Приложение InDesign использует временные файлы для хранения и извлечения данных; эти временные файлы записываются на загрузочный диск. Как правило, объем свободного пространства на загрузочном диске должен быть в 3–5 раз больше размера документа (включая связанные изображения) или составлять 10 % от емкости диска, в зависимости от того, какое значение больше. Вы можете освободить пространство на загрузочном диске, удалив ненужные файлы либо сохранив файлы на других разделах или дисках. Чтобы проверить объем доступного пространства на загрузочном диске, выполните следующие действия:
- Щелкните значок загрузочного диска на рабочем столе.
- Выберите Файл > Получить информацию > Общая информация.
- Обратите внимание на емкость и объем доступного пространства на диске.
Решение: откройте копию документа, а не оригинал.
Когда вы открываете документ как копию, InDesign считывает исходный файл и открывает безымянную копию. Если вы можете открыть копию документа, выберите Файл > Сохранить как, сохраните копию под другим именем, отличным от имени исходного документа, после чего используйте копию вместо исходного документа.
Выполните следующие действия, чтобы открыть документ в качестве копии:

Принудительно перекомпонуйте все материалы с помощью комбинации клавиш Cmd + Opt + / в macOS и Ctrl + Alt + / в Windows.
Копирование элементов на странице в новый документ позволяет избежать возникновения структурных (внутренних) повреждений. Если после копирования элементов на странице в новый документ неполадка не устранена, удаляйте элементы по одному и постарайтесь определить, какой из элементов является источником проблемы.
Выполните указанные действия, чтобы скопировать элементы на странице в новый документ.

Выберите Файл > Создать и нажмите ОК в диалоговом окне Новый документ.

Выберите Окно > Мозаика, чтобы отобразить оба документа.

Щелкните по исходному документу, чтобы активировать его.

Перетащите страницу или разворот в окно с новым документом. InDesign скопирует страницу или разворот в новый документ, добавляя при необходимости страницы.

Сохраните новый документ, присвоив ему новое название (отличное от названия исходного документа), и проверьте, возникнет ли проблема в этот раз.
- Если неполадка не устранена, в таком случае повреждение не является структурным (например, на страницах-шаблонах или страницах документа). Удаляйте элементы по очереди, чтобы определить, является ли один из элементов источником проблемы.
- Если неполадка устранена, то, возможно, повреждение является структурным. Повторите шаги с 4 по 7 для каждой из оставшихся страниц или разворота.
Стили, созданные в InDesign или импортируемые с файлами, созданными в других приложениях, могут быть повреждены. Также документ может содержать пустые страницы и ненужные элементы. Чтобы убедиться, что проблема заключается в этом, удалите стили и страницы, после чего сохраните документ повторно.

Если прочие способы не помогают, повторно создайте документ. Старайтесь чаще создавать резервные копии и периодически проверять документ, чтобы убедиться в том, что импортированные элементы не вызывают проблем.

Could try a different file format, does it have to be a jpeg?
I take it the jpegs load back into Photoshop without problems? Might not be Indesign, Photoshop could be saving dodgy files, could try saving out a jpeg from something like Preview to see if this is the case.

But this worked for us in 2021 to solve bad JPEG exports from Photoshop to InDesign. Toggling Progressive off and switching to Baseline allowed it to import neatly.

Which version of InDesign and OS are you using?
Sounds like a corrupt JPG, can you open it/them in other applications?
Create a fresh JPG with a new image and try Placing that in InDesign. If you have a problem again, maybe try resetting your InDesign preferences: Close InDesign. Then hold down Ctrl + Alt + Shift (Windows) or Cmd + Ctrl + Opt + Shift (Mac), and relaunch InDesign. Respond in the affirmative to the dialog asking if you really want to replace the preferences.

I am encountering the same issue. i work with large format images (clipped PSDs more often than not) for trade show graphics, and this is definitely a bug with CC 2019 and not your image file. The reason I know this is that there is a workaround. It is not an answer to your question per se; but, the only way I have been able to get my work done is to re-install CC 2018, export my InDesign file as an IDML in order to open it and import the image into the file I open in 2018. I hope Adobe fixes this soon.
Adobe, please address this issue. If it were a matter of corrupt image files, they could not be imported into 2018 either.

Finally i can fix it by myself and need a little trick to solve it. First, if you want to know which photo that make it crash, you need to choose Export & Save as to jpg. And it will show you the page contain corrupted jpg which make this trouble. So, if you found that page you can replace the corrupted photo with the new one. And last, try to export to pdf. Good luck!

I was experiencing the same issue. Exporting the InDesign file to jpg’s worked for me. I could easily see which page was causing the problem. I just needed to do an elimination process by removing each image and exporting that page till I knew which one it was. Thanks for the tip bolkiahs!

This issue hppens usually with files saved from apps like whatsapp. Simple trick is open in preview or any othe app that can open it, resave as jpg and import into indesign. works every time

Image will be save as from JPEG to jpg in MS Paint / Photoshop / other application. It will solve this issue. One or some images that is no problem, but more than hundred images what will be the solution. Every image will be separately open in photoshop/mspaint and resave it to JPG format individually.

Could try a different file format, does it have to be a jpeg?
I take it the jpegs load back into Photoshop without problems? Might not be Indesign, Photoshop could be saving dodgy files, could try saving out a jpeg from something like Preview to see if this is the case.

Sorry for necro,
But this worked for us in 2021 to solve bad JPEG exports from Photoshop to InDesign. Toggling Progressive off and switching to Baseline allowed it to import neatly.

Which version of InDesign and OS are you using?
Sounds like a corrupt JPG, can you open it/them in other applications?
Create a fresh JPG with a new image and try Placing that in InDesign. If you have a problem again, maybe try resetting your InDesign preferences: Close InDesign. Then hold down Ctrl + Alt + Shift (Windows) or Cmd + Ctrl + Opt + Shift (Mac), and relaunch InDesign. Respond in the affirmative to the dialog asking if you really want to replace the preferences.

I am encountering the same issue. i work with large format images (clipped PSDs more often than not) for trade show graphics, and this is definitely a bug with CC 2019 and not your image file. The reason I know this is that there is a workaround. It is not an answer to your question per se; but, the only way I have been able to get my work done is to re-install CC 2018, export my InDesign file as an IDML in order to open it and import the image into the file I open in 2018. I hope Adobe fixes this soon.
Adobe, please address this issue. If it were a matter of corrupt image files, they could not be imported into 2018 either.

В окне предупреждения не указано, что это за поврежденный JPG? Сколько файлов JPG помещено в ваш INDD? Если их немного, вы можете потратить несколько минут и с помощью «процесса исключения» начать удалять по 1 JPG за раз и попробовать повторно экспортировать в PDF. Если в INDD много файлов JPG, все равно выполняйте «процесс исключения», НО попробуйте удалить целые страницы. Невозможно сказать, что сломано в JPG без Photoshop, но вы, по крайней мере, можете найти виновника.

I Can’t seem to place any picture in indesign, please resolve this issue.
This happens to me a lot, everytime I receive an JPEG from WHATSAPP. I think there’s something happening about the image extension .JPEG, if you rename it to .JPG it works (sometimes).
The ultimate fix is to open img on Photoshop or Preview (Mac) for example and resave it.
Have been experiencing the same issues with normal image files. Have attached one of the images that I’ve had trouble with.
I am having this issue and I NEED to export to pdf. I have over 1,000 pics how do I find the one that is supposedly corrupt? It’s a nightmare. I tried the preflight and link panels and there are NO errors. HELP!!

Hello,
I have been having problems with both Indesign CS3 and CS4 and exporting large documents to a PDF-file. Exporting halts with error messages like: «Failed to Export the PDF file» in CS4 or «Error encountered while reading JPEG image» in CS3.
Problem can be corrected by simply closing InDesign and restarting it and opening the same file again. It appears that problem occurs more often the file is large. Any suggestions how to fix this problem?
I’m using Vista 64-bit and have 8GB memory.

And I also get error «Error encountered while reading JPEG image. Image may be damaged or incompatible. Resave the image with different settings and try again.» when Exportin to PDf.
And if I just save/quit/reopen, I’m able to export the pdf fine. Sometimes I have to close other programs, before I’m succesful.

I have a vague memory, too that there are problems with JPEG2000 files, but that doesn’t seem like the problem if you can get the same file to work after a restart. Empty the temp folders and see if it helps.

In terms of Vista 64-bit, InDesign only runs as a 32-bit applications meaning that it only has approximately 3 gigabytes of virtual memory available, regardless of how much physical memory is available on your system. Only 64-bit applications, such as Photoshop CS4 can really take full advantage of the 64-bit addressing.
I also encountered similar problems with exporting PDF from very large documents with InDesign 5.0.x on all versions of Windows. That problem seems to have gone away with InDesign 6.0, at least for my very large documents. I suspect that there may be some process memory leak problem that you are encountering. What got me around those problems was (1) save early and save often and (2) exit and re-enter InDesign before performing such large exports, making sure that you don’t page through the document prior to doing the export.

Every time we open a document that was created in InDesign CS3, edit it, and try to export or print it, we get generic failed errors. Whether printing to a printer or Acrobat, or exporting a PDF, we always get a failure.
We’ve discovered that if we go through and manually re-link all of the links, it fixes it.
Wow… what a dumb bug, and one that has cost us a horrendous amount of time on large projects.
Adobe, please release a fix for this immediately.

Yes you’re right; we just realized this problem is far more severe than simply a CS3 compatibility bug. This is an intrinsic design flaw in the InDesign linking system. We used to use Version Cue CS3 until they unleashed VC4 upon us and nearly crippled our entire studio with that nightmare of a release. So we moved all of our data safely onto a shared network drive before we lost anymore of it in VC4, and apparently that’s what has caused the linking problem. InDesign does not have relative links, and it does not properly indicate that it’s the links that are causing the problem, leaving us to fend for ourselves and eventually figure out on our own that we have to re-link everything.
Disastrous. Someone needs to be fired.

InDesign does not have relative links
ID is smart enough to look in subfolders of the folder in which the document is stored, but how would you expect any application to find a link with an unspecified path on an external server? There’s no way you’d be sure you have the right link if there were multiple files with the same name, which is not that unusual.

Actually, it does. You should have received a warning when the file was opened that the links were missing. I know because that feature was missing in early pre-release versions and I fought a hard battle to get it restored. Missing links are also highlighted in the links panel and in pre-flight. If you don’t know you have missing or modified links it’s because you’ve turned off features and ignored a warning on open.

I’m encountering a pdf exporting issue where the exported pdf file is way too high in file size. I’ve tried reducing all the settings to intolerable settings and file size is still not changing. I’ve tried to reduce the file size in preview but this only seems to increase the size.
I don’t have acrobat pro so I can’t go in to the pdf and remove all the metadata, to reduce the size. I never had this problem with Cs2. Any ideas out there?

User-to-user doesn’t mean Adobe employees are excluded. It means that
this is people helping people, maybe even some of them from Adobe. It
also means that no one here is going to fix the software for you.
Does the problem go away if you get your files off the network? Network
file linking problems are pretty common, and the simplest workaround is
to stop working through the network.

Many programs understand relative paths. If I move a project directory (and keep all its subdirectories intact), opening up that project in InDesign should result in no differences to me. Instead, I have to re-link each file that already exists in the projects subfolder. Why? This makes no sense. Call it ranting if you want, but this seems like a pretty major oversight to me. I am a paying customer and when Adobe introduces a bug or misses such a critical feature, I have every right to complain.
And yes, I realize that InDesign has an area where it warns you about missing links (the… uhh… *Links* panel). I have been using InDesign since it was introduced (and was a very vocal advocate of it over Quark), it’s just that this notification function *does not work* in this particular instance. There is NO visual clue as to why you are not able to export or print anything, and the error simply states itself as an error and that’s it. Several of the people in my studio spent several hours today all struggling with the same problem until someone stumbled upon the solution with trial and error. Not acceptable. If you think that it is, then you are not the target of my messages and I will thank you for your response but encourage you to spend your time replying to other threads that apply more directly to you.

Handling of missing links HAS changed, and in my opinion for the worse, but at the request of users, so that missing links no longer open the Links panel automatically or ask you to update on opening as they used to, though you should still receive a warning that the links are missing UNLESS YOU HAVE TURNED IT OFF IN YOUR PREFERENCES. It’s on by default and you will find the option under the file handling section.
The rationale is that many workflows do not require that links be intact to accomplish the current editing, and longer documents with hundreds of missing links used to take many minutes to open while ID searched, essentially costing those users lots of money.
IF you have stored the links in the same directory as the .indd file, and IF you have moved the entire directory and IF you have enabled finding missing links when opening files, InDesign will find and update the locations for the links when the file is opened. If ID is unable to locate a link, because it is not in the current directory or a subfolder, you will see a warning message (in the past you would have had the option to browse for the missing files), and you must open the links panel if you wish to fix them manually.
In my opinion this is a very acceptable situation, and a great benefit to all types of workflows. I need to know links are modified or missing, so I’ve left that enabled. Those who don’t need to know are no longer bothered or delayed. I suggest you pay a visit to the preferences and make sure that missing/modified checks are enabled, and if you are still having problems then your links aren’t stored in the same directory, and that has always been an issue in ID when things get moved.

Works for me. Indesign does understand relative paths. If I move a
directory it still knows where the links in subdirectories go.
As you say, it makes no sense that it would work as you describe.

I really have no opinion about it. I’m not seeing the behavior you’re
seeing, so it’s really easy for me to believe you’re getting yourself
all worked up about nothing, especially because:
1) You haven’t answered my question. Does the problem go away when you
get the files off the network?
2) You haven’t answered Peter’s question. In Edit > Preferences > File
Handling, is «Check Links Before Opening Document» turned off? How about
«Find Missing Links Before Opening Document»? What is «Default Relink
Folder» set to?

Hey everyone, I am trying to open a CS3 file in CS1 and was wondering if exporting it in a PDF then opening it in Illustrator to make changes works for you. Any other ideas for editing this file? Thanks!

Adobe Illustrator is not, repeat not, repeat yet AGAIN not a general PDF file editor. The only PDF files that Adobe Illustrator can “edit” losslessly are PDF files saved by the same version of Illustrator using the “save editability” option available at PDF file creation time. Any and all other attempts to edit PDF files with Adobe Illustrator may and very often result in (1) loss of content, (2) text encoding changes, and/or (3) color space changes.
Opening and editing general PDF files (and I include PDF files created either directly via PDF export from InDesign or those created via distillation of PostScript from InDesign) is therefore strongly discouraged as a dangerous workflow practice.

I have a 29 page indesign document that I am trying to export to PDF. One page in particular (pg 4) continually prompts a failure screen that says the application has run out of virtual memory.
There are two PDF files linked to the page, each approximately 1.75 MB is size, and each having a vector frame. One of the images spills over onto pg 5 and a pdf (3.7MB) from page 5 is partially present on page 4. Pg 5 has no problem exporting.
I’m running AdobeCS3 with Windows Vista Ultimate on a Dell Precision 4300 (Intel Core2 Duo T7700 2.4 GHz, 3.58 GB RAM, 32 operating system.
I need to fix this ASAP. Any help is appreciated.

Just curious. How are we defining «long document» in this thread?
We have an 84-pg. directory, a 32-pg. real estate guide, and will soon have a 200+ pg. book in production. Are all of these «long documents?»

CS4 6.0.1 update did not fix our problems. We are now experimenting by starting to use PSD-format instead of JPEG-format in our picture files. This might cause especially the «Error encountered while reading JPEG image» error.

What is the resolution of your images, and what are the compression/downsampling settings in the PDF joboptions you’re using? I’m suspicious of further issues in the memory allocation methods similar to the one that was addressed in the 6.0.1 update.

Resolution of the linked images varies quite a lot. We always use max. available resolution for the images, since we do use same images for posters and catalogs.
Images are downsampled to 200 pixels per inch using bicubic downsampling and automatic (JPEG) compression. Image quality is Maximum.
PDF compatibility is Acrobat 6 (PDF 1.5).

After doing some testing, I’m quite certain that JPEG-pictures are causing the problems and random «Error encountered while reading JPEG image» error. Simply re-saving the pictures as PSD-format solved out all the problems.
So, my suggestion is not to use JPEG-pictures with InDesign CS3/CS4.

Further more, only JPEG-pictures with resolution over 3000×3000 pixels seem to be causing problems. Reducing picture size or changing the format to PSD is the solution.
Does anybody know how to fix this error? It doesn’t say anywhere what image gives the error. Preflight doesn’t show either. Its hard to figure out which image it is when i have used several jpeg files in my layout.

The alert box does not say what the damaged JPG is? How many JPGs are placed in your INDD? If not many, you can take a few minutes and with the «process of elimination» start deleting 1 JPG at a time and try re-exporting as PDF. If there are a lot of JPGs in the INDD, still do the «process of elimination» BUT try deleting entire pages. There’s no telling what’s broken about the JPG without Photoshop, but you can at least find the culprit.

Things you can try before exporting:
- Check your
Linkspanel and see if there are any missing/corrupt images. - Do a
Preflightand see if that reports any errors. - Check if there’s any leftover images outside your artboards.
- Check if any of the images are still open/unsaved in other apps (Photoshop etc) or locked in a syncing app like Dropbox or Google Drive, or on an external drive?

Save the document as an idml — re-open and see errors. You can then replace the damaged file — Indesign will place the damaged JPEG as an EPS.
