pep8-checker

Build Status

Fabfile to

  • Check syntax and lint the python code based on PEP8 standard
  • Auto-correct according to PEP8 standard(to certain extent) and remove .pyc files

Prerequisites

  • requirements-python2.txt
    It contains the pip dependencies, which were used to test script with Python 2.7.13

  • requirements-python3.txt
    It contains the pip dependencies, which were used to test script with Python 3.5.3

Installation

  • pip install -r requirements-python2.txt

OR

  • pip install -r requirements-python3.txt

Usage

This includes fabfile.py which contains the neccessary functions
Below are 2 intuitive commands supported:

1. To check syntax and linting in directory(ies) or file(s)

  • fab check:dir1,dir2,filepath1
    It will check all .py files inside both the directories dir1 and dir2. Also it will check file at filepath1 if its .py

  • fab check:filepath1,filepath2
    It will check both files at filepath1 and filepath2

  • fab check
    It will check all .py files inside current directory

2. To auto-correct to PEP8 standards in case of directory(ies) or file(s)

  • fab auto_clean:dir1,dir2,filepath1
    It will remove .pyc files and auto-correct all the .py files(to certain extent), inside both the directories dir1 and dir2 and also file at filepath1 if it’s .py

  • fab auto_clean
    It will remove .pyc files and auto-correct all .py files(to certain extent), inside current directory

pep8 — Python style guide checker

pep8 is a tool to check your Python code against some of the style
conventions in PEP 8.

Features

  • Plugin architecture: Adding new checks is easy.

  • Parseable output: Jump to error location in your editor.

  • Small: Just one Python file, requires only stdlib. You can use just
    the pep8.py file for this purpose.

  • Comes with a comprehensive test suite.

Installation

You can install, upgrade, uninstall pep8.py with these commands:

$ pip install pep8
$ pip install --upgrade pep8
$ pip uninstall pep8

There’s also a package for Debian/Ubuntu, but it’s not always the
latest version.

Example usage and output

$ pep8 --first optparse.py
optparse.py:69:11: E401 multiple imports on one line
optparse.py:77:1: E302 expected 2 blank lines, found 1
optparse.py:88:5: E301 expected 1 blank line, found 0
optparse.py:222:34: W602 deprecated form of raising exception
optparse.py:347:31: E211 whitespace before '('
optparse.py:357:17: E201 whitespace after '{'
optparse.py:472:29: E221 multiple spaces before operator
optparse.py:544:21: W601 .has_key() is deprecated, use 'in'

You can also make pep8.py show the source code for each error, and
even the relevant text from PEP 8:

$ pep8 --show-source --show-pep8 testsuite/E40.py
testsuite/E40.py:2:10: E401 multiple imports on one line
import os, sys
         ^
    Imports should usually be on separate lines.

    Okay: import osnimport sys
    E401: import sys, os

Or you can display how often each error was found:

$ pep8 --statistics -qq Python-2.5/Lib
232     E201 whitespace after '['
599     E202 whitespace before ')'
631     E203 whitespace before ','
842     E211 whitespace before '('
2531 E221 multiple spaces before operator
4473    E301 expected 1 blank line, found 0
4006    E302 expected 2 blank lines, found 1
165     E303 too many blank lines (4)
325 E401 multiple imports on one line
3615    E501 line too long (82 characters)
612     W601 .has_key() is deprecated, use 'in'
1188 W602 deprecated form of raising exception

Changes:

  • Honor # noqa for errors E711 and E712. (Issue #180)

    filename argument to read from stdin. This usage is supported

    with pip and Python 3. (Issue #172)

  • Add __pycache__ to the ignore list.

    code is ignored in the default configuration because PEP 8 recommends
    to “use your own judgement”. (Issue #96)

  • Lines with a # nopep8 at the end will not issue errors on line
    length E501 or continuation line indentation E12*. (Issue #27)

  • Fix AssertionError when the source file contains an invalid line
    ending «rrn». (Issue #119)

  • Read the [pep8] section of tox.ini or setup.cfg if present.

i am developing a python library with couple of modules and files. I have read through the pep8 rules given in the below link

https://www.python.org/dev/peps/pep-0008/

Is there any package or software available which can check the python styles and structure .

for example , indendation with spaces or tabs , variable conventions etc.

I am looking for a module which can perform this task..

The term for this is «linting». A python module called Pylint is available.

It checks for coding standards and errors with full customizability. It can be run from the command line, as part of a continuous integration workflow, integrated into various IDEs.
